Super Soil Recipe.

  1. Hello their I am fairly new to organic growing. Here's a recipe from a subcool super soil mix. I have 8 bags of fax farm ocean Forrest, now since I have Hurd they burn young-ins I cut ever two bags and add light warrior. I add 35 lbs of warm casting, 5 lbs of blood and bone meal, 5 lbs of bat guano, 3 lbs of rock phosphate, 3/4 cups of epson salt, 1/2 cup of dolomite lime and 1/2 cup of azomite and 2 tbs of powdered humic acid. Now any suggestions?

Yeah. Return everything that you've purchased and read this (the first several posts, anyways)...

    http://forum.grasscity.com/organic-growing/1116550-easy-organic-soil-mix-beginners.html

You will notice that it is VERY different from Subcool's mix. BTW, he's not held in very high regard around these parts. The majority of us are not fans of cannabis profiteering...

I used Subcool's mix my first time around. I was very disappointed to say the least. In retrospect (and all fairness to Subcool), I can say that it was due to the poor quality of my "humic" component, which would be your worm castings in this case. Over several years of research and soil experimentation, I can also say that his mix is WAY overbuilt for indoor potted plants.

Compost/EWC is THE MOST important part of your soil mix. Without quality humic components, all the rest of the stuff that you add to your mix means diddley squat. What EWC are you planning to use?

There are also better alternatives to the ingredients that he uses based on the myriad secondary metabolites/biochemicals that are produced by plants, as opposed to those that are NOT present in animal byproducts.

If you really want suggestions on how to proceed with your soil mix from folks in this forum, you might want to rethink your game plan...

  3. I wouldnt use fox farm soil at all, ever.

I recommend 420 recipe soil as a base. Less wood, bugs, and much better quality control. Much more organic imo.

Waktoo knows his shit. His advice is gold.

  4. I am experimenting with coco coir/organic compost/green bat guano/guinea pig poo/perlite/dolomite lime/little bit of ewc but need to add more! Supplementing with fish/seabird guano/fish emulsion/sea kelp hi brix molasses. Sometimes I make poo tea...I try to maintain 5-6.5ph coming in. I've tried not phing and it leads to spots/twisted leaves/deficiency ect. Sampling with a few clones and maters....so far real good growth!

  5. Mrbigud, I ran Sub's supersoil for about three years, sometimes it was great, sometimes it wasn't. I was always tweaking this or that. Never could get it just right. And when I started to recycle my supersoil it didn't take long for it to go horribly wrong.

There's definetly soil mixes that would be way easier to use than supersoil. Just using a good compost and earthworm castings top dressed goes a long ways towards healthy plants. Mix in botanicle teas using kelp meal, alfalfa meal, neem cake, comfrey, stinging nettles, etc. and you'll come out ahead of the game.

If you do go the supersoil route, I would go light, say 20-25% at the bottom of your pot's. If part way through your cycle the plants start to fade you can always top dress with more...SW

Here's an easy way of breaking down soil mixes like we use here:

1/3 Sphagnum Peat moss (coir works okay but not as well as peat or leaf mold)

1/3 Humus component (EWC/compost or vermicompost, make sure you source the HIGHEST quality possible while staying within your budget. This is the "engine" behind our soils productivity; without a decent source of "humus" you will suffer problems that no fertilizer will be able to fix.)

1/3 Aeration (perlite, scoria, sand (to a small extent), rice hulls etc)

Then, per each cubic foot (7.5 gallons) of the base mixture  mentioned above, add amendments totaling no more than 3-4 cups (TOTAL AMENDMENTS). For example, I prepare my soil with 2 cups kelp, 1 cup neem and 1 cup crab shell meal per cubic foot.

I use around 1/2 cup of oyster shell flour (98% calcium carbonate, bout the same thing as agricultural lime which is widely available in most parts of the world) per cubic foot, though I have heard recommendations for 1 cup per I believe this is directly related to your humus component and how it is created. My own vermicompost supplies enough Ca to where I hardly need to worry about liming soils, especially past the initial mixture.

I also highly advise sourcing some "rock dust", or micronized rock fines (>200 mesh) from either a local gravel pit or concrete crushing outfit or sourcing some through retailers. I apply this material around 2-4 cups per cubic foot, depending on how "dense" my soil mix is. If I had access to large amounts of leaf mold I would reconstruct my soil to incorporate that as my main bulking agent.... allows for a higher rate of rock dust with less compaction issues.

"The Particle Conversion Chart shows various categories of "soil separates" (ground particles) listed with their diameters in microns (thousandths of a mm.) and their corresponding screen mesh sizes. "Mesh" simply refers to a screen with a given number of holes per inch.
\nThe more finely ground the rock, the more readily microorganisms will have access to the minerals. John Hamaker uses the term "gravel dust" to mean a dust "90% of which will pass through a 200-mesh screen."
    \n
This is a wonderful resource for information regarding rock dust.

  16. Guys I just found this when doing a search for super soils, can I run this by you?

1/3 part my compost. Leaves, mulch, yard waste, some manure, years old.
1/3 part Pro mix (On hand, bought it season clearanced)
    1/3 patt EWC's. (Wiggle Worm)

add in some Kelp, Alpha, lime, and some neem.

Let it work for how long?

Will cooler weather slow down the cooling process?

Can I use it as the only soil in the container? (indoor)

What should I top dress with?

What will it need between runs?

Thanks... It' gettin ready for a indoor run and fear I should have started to soil already...

  17. This thing we do isn't an overnight thing. Patience is a must and then you will be where you want to be.

Stay out of the darn hydro stores next time. You don't need them if you want to build a real soil.
