New Journal. First Scrog.

  1. Hi i'm just starting this journal today. i started building my grow cab last night and will post some pics this evening. i had a journal i started a long time ago but didnt update due to paronoia lol this one will be updated as its not a big unit like the last one. here are the details

started 5 whitre widdows last night about midnight. checked them at 10am and they havent cracked yet.

im going to start them in rockwoll cubes after they crack and get a bit of a tap root.

my germination method is folded over wet paper tawel in a zip lock placed in a warm dark place.

i will be using advanced nutrients as i think they are the best (each to their own) i will udate my product list as i go i have not bought anything yet.

i will not be doing mothers and clones this time around im going to be going from fem seed every grow.

    Cabnet setup

Ok this is a little cramped height wise but should serve my urposes well with some management.

my my box is 3x4x4 (3 wide 4 long 4 high)

height may be an issue but im doing scrog so i feel like i can control height pretty easy.

the main challenge is i plan on using an HID 400w HPS or 600w HPS (have not decided on veg lights yet) this said heat will be an issue i know that already but i have some very creative ways to keep heat down.

light will be in a cool tube drawing air from outside the box and expelling outside the box.

The box will be air tight so i will need to cool the box with a remote chiller.

remote chiller play will consist of a pump, a rubbermaid tote, a small rad or transmission cooler, hose, a fan and glycol.

tote full of glycol will sit outside my garage door (winter is coming). 2 lines will be plumbed into the tote one for suction of the pump that will be in the garage and one for return. pump will pump cold fluid through the rad and back to the tote. fan will blow air through the rad (these comonents will be inside the box on a thermostat) this should give me the required cooling.

co2 will be supplied by a mushroom bag. of that does not suffice i have a co2 system i can rig up in a pinch.

this takes care of light and heat for my box.

Plants will be hand fed and i will be using sunshine mix #4 or simular medium.

will attach a few pics of my setup tonight.

  2. got home to night and 4 seeds were cracked and had a good bit of tap root showing so i planted them in small pots i picked up today at the hardware store. i was going to use rock cubes but decided against it this grow. im starting them in miricle-gro starter soil mix. i know thats a bad word to most but i have found it a good product for this application in the past. 4 cracked good and the last one wasnt quite as good as the other 4 but i planted it as well as the others seem to be doing so well. that may bite me in the end but if i end up with 4 out of 5 ill still be very happy,.

While i was at the harware store i also picked up a few 70w HPS yard lights for $30 each. they were on sale half off so i figured why not. theyre better than 70W of cfl and will make goos sub lighting in flower after i get a big one. i will be doing a write up tonight on how i turned these farm yard lights into a good grow light with pics so stay tuned.

i have alot to do in my box still, mylar or white paint being one of them things to do yet

  4. ok so when yhou get a HPS yard light it has a photo sensor / relay on the top that turns the ight on at night and off during the day. we need to disable this.

so the picture of the screw driver in the hole is the screw you need to remove inorder to get the photo sensor socket out.

once the socket is out it has 3 wires a red a black and a white. the white is a neutral to operate the relay just tape that one over, strip back the red and black and tape them together (i taped but a marett and tape should be used)

next you have to reassemble the unit with the photo sensor disabled

then install power cords, i used a short piece to wire both fixtures in parallel and installed a power cord on the last one i wired up. see plug wiring pics.

next i fastened the two fixtures to eachother, they come with 3 holes in the arm so you can lag bolt them to a house to a pole. i was going to bolt them together with 1/4" bolts but you can have all the 1/4" bolts in the world but they are useless if you dont have a nut. so i used zip ties and they are holding very sturdy. see pics.

and thats it in a nut shell. i also had to remove the glass from the tin reflectors that was as easy as pelling back a bit of tin and oulling the glass out.

just an update nothing popped through the medium yet, fingers crossed to see some cotyledon
soon. pretty excited. ordering or picking up a 600w hps soon.

im having trouble with the decision.
i can get a 600w digital dim able ballast with a 6" cool tube with the side reflectors plus MH and HPS bulb  for $204 canadian free shipping on EBAY.

    or

I can buy locally off the classifieds thats this one,

600W magnetic ballast HPS bulb, and a high quality brand new silverstar hood.for $150

the local buy is good but,

    cons

    1. not digital and cant run MH for veg (and only comes with 1 bulb)
    2. not dim able like the ebay digital (im worried im going to have trouble controlling heat until i have my mini heat exchanger setup)
    3. magnetic ballast uses more power.
    pros

    1. cheaper
    2. can have it tomorrow (but dont need it for a while so some shipping time is nto a big deal)
    3. the hood is going to be much better than a cool tube with reflectors.

whats your opinion? i like to save money but would i be really?

Maybe there are advantages to magnetic ballasts that im not aware of?

  6. Update Added 600W HPS and Silverstar air cooled shade with 4" 170 cfm fan cooling it. keeps my cab 74-78F so its not as bad as i thought it would be. One of the white widows poked its head out this morning. The other 4 have not yet and im kind of suspecting them not to. i rave read some bad reports on the seed vendor i got these from but we will see. That Said i have add 5 Greengouse Seeds train werk.

    pictures to follow tonight maybe

  7. Good luck too you, I like watching new grows from start.

  8. good to see a reply i was starting to worry lol

i may need the luck ive been out of the grow game for a while.

  9. Question those 70 watt HPS they fit regular sockets? Or is it a self contained sort of unit? And agree totally about them being great for supplemental light I didnt relize they came in 70 watts.

  10. The bulb is a regular socket style but still needs a ballast to operate. The ballast is in the housing that the sockets hang from. They are very small and not much to them ballasts. And 70w hps is 6000 lumens.

The bulbs don't build much heat either so if you attached a long wire and made the ballasts remote I don't think you would see much of a temp increase

  13. I think Ima be stealing that Idea. Good one bro.

  15. Red neck air conditioner?

  16. Yes. I'm undecided how redneck it will be. It's going to be a 5 gal pail in a deep freeze full of an antifreeze mix with a suction and a return line plumbed in. There will be a pump circulating it through (and this is where it could get really redneck) either an old transmission cooler with a fan on it or a nice in line heat exchanger like the ice cap or the heat-x-tractor. That will be controlled by my own thermostat and relay system keeping it in proper temperature range.

  17. Way better the one i was gonna make, 5 gallon bucket couple holes in the side. either a bait cooler or spray foam in the bucket. hole in lid with a fan firing down on the ice, refreeze runoff as it melts. Thats about as creative as i get.

  18. quick update.

the 5 greenhouse seed co seeds have not turned out as i would have liked. i have three that have not cracked yet and they were started Monday. the other two have not came up yet after planting. emailed greenhouse and they said i may have got old stock seeds. sounds like it could be true as i don't feel as if my methods were flawed and neither does greenhouse seed co. unfortunately they will not replace the seeds due to the fact that i didnt document my methods and didn't purchase the seed pack from an approved distributor.

i hope the other replacement pack from the other seed co comes tomorrow. not having luck. i have one white widdow that is doing good. that's 1/10 seeds so far :( im examining my methods for flaws but i don't see any and neither did greenhouse. the other seed co disagreed with my methods so i will try theirs when the new seeds come.

I want to post some more pics but my shit is a mess right now and haven't  painted it white yet yet.

  19. could be water. I'm going to use bottled or RO for the new seeds

  20. Sorry bro that blows, we cant use tap water here at all. Had bring in a 150 gallon tank just for drinking water and plant water cuase the water is so horid.
