Cultural Appropriation? Is It Bad?

  1. I have a friend who is white and has that third eye piercing, it's the dermal that goes on your forehead. Anyway, someone told her that it was disrespectful to the Desi (I think that's how you say it) and Indian (from India) people. White people who wear or have dreadlocks probably know what I'm talking about. You know, when people say that white people shouldn't wear dreadlocks, (I'm black and I have locks, and personally I like them on everyone). Anyway, do you think it's wrong or disrespectful to adopt piercings/hairstyles/clothing/etc from other cultures solely for trendy reasons? I mean in my opinion, I'm totally Switzerland on it. I can understand how it could be annoying, but at the same time, I think nowadays everyone adopts from everyone, and I personally don't see a problem with it as long as credit is given where credit is due. What do you think?

  2. Cultural appropriation is just a symptom of the melting pot, baby. If someone feels so oppressed by something as insignificant as hair or holes that they feel the need to confront someone for not conforming to their vision of how people in a society should act then let then a simple remedy to that is to remove themselves from the melting pot.

Fuck that garbage. Do whatever you like, it's your right.

  3. The way I see it, there's a difference between appreciating a culture and fetishizing it.

Like I don't think dreadlocks are a problem. But I do have a problem with someone coming to a costume party in a deerskin bikini, cartoonish feather headdress, random lines painted on their face, and claiming they're a Native American.

  4. Yeah, I'd say its disrespectful. It's taking something that has hundreds, if not thousands of years of cultural importance and turning it into something flashy so an idiot can go "ooh look at meeee."
