Dark Period Before Chop Day?

Discussion in 'Growing Marijuana Outdoors' started by InnaDAZE, Sep 4, 2014.

  1. its getting closer and closer and I am just preparing. I have been reading more about these experiments on total darkness before you chop without any water so 1) it will dry up your plant a bit and 2) your plant will believe winter is already here and in exchange creating more trichomes and plants coming out more "sticky".
my question is if anybody has had any experience with this and if anyone knows what the optimum time would be doing this as I am seeing varying answers.
some say 1 day: its not even worth it as the plant will not feel as it is winter so it wont kick into "hypermode"
and some say 3-5 days is optimal.
I have not really seen any negative attempts at this and am thinking to have 2 - 3 fans in the bathroom I will bring it into so I can try to reduce the risk of mold as much as possible.
    I was thinking 3 days/72 hours
    what do you guys think?

  2. Personally I would leave it alone dude. Why risk things that late in the game

  3.
I agree with your point but there is people saying it makes such a substantial difference. and I have not read about anyone getting mold on there plant or any negative feedback on trying.
still big chance of not doing it but open to opinions and experience

  4. It does help with indoor plants. Not always possible for outdoor plants. I've also don't water for the last week. It helps dry the buds out and makes the plant think winter is coming. It begins to prepare to die and gives the flower every last bit of energy. It speeds up drying process also

Could push some plants to hermie out of panic for the same reason people are claiming it would produce more. So go ahead, if you want to risk it.

  6.
my last hydro harvest was drying up and in the dark for 48 hours. It was too frosty beforehand so it was hard to tell if it did any good.  LOL

  7. I would say not to extend the dark period...  After all... this plant has been growing fine sense the beginning of time. the things people claim would be the same or better with-out the total darkness for so long. So basicly what they are seeing is what they would have been getting anyway. Total dark periods can only lead to problems - like people trapped in caves will eventually go crazy.. haha but good luck if you decide to try.

If the risk is not worth the gain... then why?

thanks for the input. taking some of that with me
when I finish my 2 week flush whether I leave her outside or in darkness I will not water her for 3 days before I harvest so she can mature a bit longer and at same time help me with drying

lol read your last sentence and then saw the serious Nicolas Cage picture you have and it made me bust out laughing haha!
your right but I'm not sure if that would even matter if she turned hermie hours/days before harvest?
she is already a hermie I chopped off a male branch that was trying to produce pollen a few weeks ago actually.
but im thinking what can possibly happen even if she were to get so stressed out? Im thinking of being more worried about mold and even all the pet hair and human hair that can land on my buds being inside the house with the fans aiming at her... ICK!!

o man do I love frost! not sure if its because I am doing outdoor that its not SO frosty. I am doing outdoor soil in a 15 gal bucket. do you use molasses during your flush?

well the supposed science behind it is that it tricks the plant into thinking the winter solstice is coming so the plant puts all her energy into trying to make bigger buds and trichomes in a last effort to try and reproduce and catch pollen. atleast that's what I got from reading some peoples thoughts on it. so if that is correct, you are essentially just recreating another place where this does happen, like indoor growing, and in turn making her produce something that you desire more. kind of like plant genetics and cross-breeding where you try and take out and keep the most desirable traits.

  11. Plant DNA is 1 things.... tricking a plant is another... this is done by stress!!! Stress is not good and can lead to problems... thats one of the points I was making.. the other being there is no beneficial difference. People tend to see what they wanna see. An apple will take a season to grow, as bananas, pineapple ... sorry getting carried away...lol... What im saying is when you trigger the flowering period.... the plant do what it does and take about the same time doing it...(it knows winter is coming.. thats why its flowering) like you said.. its in the DNA. Dropping temps, will stress plants and make them turn funny colors (is this beneficial?) answer is no.. but it does make the marketing of a product more desirable. You get out what you put in, and genetics of the plant is the best you can ask for. Keeping it in dark does nothing but keeps it in dark...lol... your only savings here is not running your lights for 3 days....hahaha.... but stressing a fruiting plant can only diminish the final product. Now how much it will diminish may be undetectable? But here we're going the wrong way... we want to enhance the flower not diminish it. Quick thought.. maybe there looking at mold...lol.... but anyway not to argue, just my 2 cents... Grow your way and have fun doing it.... and dont ever let anyone tell you it cant be done!

in all actuality indoor growing is all about "tricking a plant"
that is why you can harvest in all seasons because "you" play the seasons and choose to decide when its time to flower and switch to 12/12
so maybe if you show the plant that death is imminent and very soon it will try as a last chance to use up all the energy that it has stored and fatten up those buds and mature to try and catch some pollen; this i am not sure of just a thought and what someone wrote about keeping in darkness
yup i do believe stressing a fruiting plant will diminish the final product but i cannot see leaving it in the dark too stressful on the plant. and as THC actually degrades in sunlight if it keeps producing trichomes and THC at night it makes sense that it might actually be more potent. as the plant uses up its last energy that it has stored in the leaves.
I have heard a lot of growers, and even professional growers state that the plant grows in sunlight and sort of gets into hibernation at night.
i believe this to be wrong.
i am in no way a professional and this is my first time finishing flowering on my own plant, but i have grown a bunch of other plants and have had my own experience/experiments with those and this plant as well
and have come to think that is gains/creates energy during the day with the use of sunlight and then uses that energy at night. whether its to build the roots or grow in vegging, shes always working
    just my 2 cents!
