Independant Scotland

Discussion in 'Politics' started by daniyalescalus, Sep 1, 2014.

  1. What do you think about an Independent Scotland?

  2. Personally I hope they vote yes and it is the start off full dissolution off the UK.

I don't think Salmond has done the best job or would be the best to take an independent scotland forward but the principle off leaving the UK I agree with.

What about you? Are you scottish?

According to the polls I have seen it looks like the scaremongering has got to the Scots...

Will be very surprised if a "yes" is the outcome...

Edit: scratch that, lead down now to 6% for the No campaign... Going to be very tight...

  5. From what I've read the guy that's really the head of the independent Scotland push is fuckin idiotic.

I'll see if I can find the discussion where he admits to not knowing what currency Scotland would use.. Then just jumpin onto the pound lol

Guy just sounds like a freedom fighter with no actual plan.

    Like the occupy protestors.

  6. Voter turnout will be what swings it I think, being such a big issue its likely many that would never normally vote will come out, I think there are predictions off an 80%+ turnout and if correct that will throw most the poll results out the window.

But i would agree that it will most likely be very close.

  7. Despite being English I have no connection to Scotland, nor have I got round to visiting it. So I'm not really bothered about the outcome, however it would either way certainly have ramifications for places like Northern Ireland and Catalonia.

  8. Britain is teetering on the abyss.
Make no mistake, all the english people saying ah fuck em let them go independant.
It will hurt this island.and after the 18th there will be a big wedge driven between the two nations. Not to mention the hatred and annomosity salmond has created within in scotland.

Hardly rocket science the scots have always had divisions,
It will be a very sad day indeed if the vote goes to the nationlists.

  9. I really hope the Scots do the right thing and vote no thanks. The UK is definitely better together.

  10. As a U.S citizen I don't really understand the intricacies of this situation.

Anyone care to fill me in?

Why would Scotland face serious ramifications from seceding?

    What is Catalana?

What part of the UK's GDP is Scotland?

Catalonia is a region of Spain that is also vying for independence.

Scotland is by all measures a junior partner in the United Kingdom. They are about 5.3m people (of about 65m in all of UK). Scotland's GDP is a little under 10% of total UK GDP.

The majority of the concerns are economic ones. There are a myriad of problems that would be created by them claiming independence. For one, the President of European Commission has said that an Independent Scotland would not be allowed to join the European Union (at least not anytime soon). Not only this, but an Independent Scotland also wants to cling onto the Pound. I'd argue that this is inadvisable. The productivity factors of Scotland's economy are very different from that of England. As such, monetary policy in the UK would follow movements of what occurs in the English economy (as well as N. Ireland and Wales) but not Scotland. This is exactly what lead to the Greek financial crisis. The European Central Bank was implementing monetary policy more or less based upon a European average. However, this type of configuration wasn't very effective (and still isn't) because it uses a 'one size fits all' type approach. The economies of Greece and Germany for instance, are far too different for the same monetary policy to be effective for both of them, yet the ECB does it anyways.

There would be capital flight from Scotland to the rest of the UK, overall devaluing the Scottish economy. Even now, as the opinion polls give a slight edge to the 'Yes' side, the investors are fleeing Scotland. Scotland wants to gain all the benefits of autonomy, but isn't willing to give up many of the perks associated with being part of the UK.

  12. Lol can't have your cake and eat it to I spose.

Sounds like if they adopt their own currency it could work better.. Possible inflated value due to a new economy to invest in.. If they changed currencies

Cause honestly with just under 10% of the population of UK and 10% of the total GDP of the UK it seems like the economy itself of the Scottish wouldn't completely keel over..

    Very weird times.

    Next will be Texas

  13. Scotland does have oil, and by all accounts there is rumour of an un tapped oil field that is meant to be big.

Prolly why the main political keaders from England are rushing up to scotland to plead to stay lol

Yea its big changes ahead I don't wish either side any bad will I hope we do stay in the union cause personally I think its a dangerous gamble, but if its a split then I hope its not to detrimental to the UK

Fuck the union flag will be no more :(

I'm sure the flag wouldn't change, assuming Wales and Northern Ireland stay in the union. If the entire Union goes, maybe. I have a hard time picturing an independent Wales.

  15. Ofc it will change Wales are NIRISH flags aren't in the unuon jack.
Its made up the english and scottish emblems
If we split the flag will be obsolete.

Im sure a few nations will be happy lol
They called it the butchers apron haha

  16.
The diagonal red cross is the cross of St. Patrick and represents Northern Ireland.

Regardless, that's besides the point. It's just a flag and it still has meaning, with or without Scotland in the Union. Couldn't really give it up in favour of the English flag, because then Wales and Northern Ireland would be unhappy. Keeping it is harmless, and changing it kind of pointless. At least in my opinion.

  17. Are they aware of the economic impacts of doing such? Especially in an economy like this?

  18. The Scots elected one Tory MP last time out so there is only one member of government representing Scotland.

The SNP who ran a very clear campaign stating that their main aim was an independent Scotland won an overall majority.

The people of Scotland will decide their faith and I for one hope they vote yes.

  19. Billions of pounds wiped off value of Scottish-linked firms in market fright

    http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2014/sep/08/billions-pounds-off-value-scottish-firms-market-fright-independence

Billions of pounds were wiped off the value of companies with Scottish links and the pound was pummelled as markets took fright at the increasing prospect of Scotland voting next week to break away from the United Kingdom.

Investors on Monday dumped companies with exposure to Scotland, including the Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds Banking Group, which owns Bank of Scotland.

They also ditched sterling, which at one point fell to its lowest level against the dollar for 10 months.
