My Plant Is Really Short And Bushy

Discussion in 'Sick Plants and Problems' started by Parallelism, Aug 26, 2014.

  1. Hey GC, I have a potential problem.

I have three plants in my grow box (3x3x6). All 3 are extremely bushy. I use a 250w HPS light about 1 foot away from the plants. One plant has been in veg for about 50 days and it's less than 1ft by 1ft. It's extremely bushy. It's growing well, just so compact and bushy. I recently (7 days ago) topped it for the first time and using LST technique to pull apart some of the bush so light can penetrate.

My question: How does a bushy plant affect yield? Is the plant being bushy okay? Should I be stretching it on purpose?

Any advice would be great, no pics, sorry.
I should have LST'd and topped much sooner, but this is my first grow in a very long time.

  2. Bump, any experts out there?

  3. Bushy is good, lots of bud sites, longer time wise to trim but not bad.

Clones tend to be bushy and yield fat too.

So you going to flower them someday? 50 days is a plenty long veg.

  4. Could be indica plants. Bushy plants tend to have good yields.

  5. If you're still in veg you can defoliate a little bit if you're worried about light penetration

Mines a little frost bush, 250w hps too. Long as you aren't getting bugs or mold I don't see it being that big a deal. Pics in my thread if you want to compare.

I am going to lollipop the bottom half to try and send it up top next time though.

  7.
Good to know. I've been pulling down 4 of her branches trying to help the light get inside of her. She's really busy with a really thick stem, good replies in this thread, nice to know bushy isn't bad at all. I'm just worried that when I go to flower her, my yield will be lame because the potential flowers will be in the shade.

I want to flower her now, but my "partner" is insistent on letting her grow more... Lol. We've agreed to flower her when one of our automatics start to flower too, we'll flower both of them at the same time on a 12/12 light cycle. It's a "Chronic Fruity Juice" seed. I'll post pics in the following weekish.

  8. I'd try and remove anything that's going to be in darkness while in veg in hindsight. I went into this grow blind and just let it go and it has a hell of allot of popcorn buds and wasted energy growing in shade.

Doesn't bother me too much as it's all still frosty and most of it will probably/hopefully get blasted but if I was only growing bud to smoke/show off I'd be disappointed.

  9. its normal i had very very bushy plant from bagseeds once
when i flipped to 12/12 i was amazed it stretched about 5 times lol

oh and how many nodes does it have?

  10. Here are your pics, guys. I have no idea how many nodes there are, so I decided to show you...

    All tips welcome

  11. Looking good mate, I don't know what you were worried about. When I say "bushy" I mean you can even see through the plant to the other side.

    Yours looks fine.

  12. My plants have the same condition. I think I know what I did wrong. Shorty after leaving the seedling stage I bumped up the light to 600 watts MH at about 30 inches. That was too intense and too hot for their maturity and the leaves began to curl upward and dry out after several days. I reduced light to 475 watts and increased distance to 41 inches. That stopped the stress problem but the damage was done. I believe heat or light stress has stunted my plants new growth. My plants look like yours. They're so short & dense that it's difficult to count the nodes because the nodes are so close together. They are very healthy otherwise. I have just finished my 5th week from germination. The plants will be flipped to flower state in a week. I'd be interested to know the outcome of your grow and if anyone can confirm my suspicion as to the cause.

  13. Hog wash lol. I germinate under double 315 cmh. Without a pic I can't really tell. But squatty is what u want. If they are vegging they will stretch at flower. If u want to detail what u grow in medium wise pot wise etc

  14. If anything u will have bigger plants just back light away they will stretch 1553247933789.jpg

  15. just be aware of light space some strains stretch more than others I currently have 2 seeds that are stretching so much they've almost out grow the tent now I'm just hoping they stop stretching it's almost a month into flower and they're still stretching

  16. Papa Puff, thanks for your reply. Here are a few pics. I'm growing 5 Purple Haze sativa. Five gallon grow bags, coco coir & perlite, 3-part General Hydroponics Flora nutrients and Calimagic. I planted seeds on Feb 14th so they are 5 weeks old now. I topped four of the five plants at the fifth node. Last photo shows leaf damage that I attribute to heat or light stress early on. You say no? I am going to scrog four of the plants. Tallest overall height is about 9 inches. My concern is that these plants are too compact and need to get "longer" before I can train them to a trellis. This is my first grow. IMG_4516.JPG IMG_4516.JPG IMG_4518.JPG IMG_4520.JPG
