First Grow - Small Apartment

Discussion in 'Indoor Grow Journals' started by Heasie, Aug 22, 2014.

  1. My first grow:
    - 2 plants
    - 6 CFL bulbs ranging from 80 to 200 watts
    - 6 sockets/wires for the lights to hang from
    - 1 large Rubbermaid bin
    - 1 small bin from the dollar store
    - 1 mini USB fan
    - 1 normal household fan
    - Organic insecticide
    - soil / liquid plant food
    - Exacto knife
    - Pots
    - some odds and ends, duct tape etc...

    LOCATION - Canada

MY STORY - I live with my girlfriend in a one bedroom apartment. I have always smoked large amounts of weed and decided it would be worth the investment to support my habit in a fun way, as in grow my own shit! The issue was the size it would take up in our apartment. I needed to build a small unit that would grow enough plants to keep my papers filled but not "control" the room it was in.

I fortunately came across 30 seeds this summer and started my grow outside on my 7th floor balcony on July 17th. I had 1 strike against me - It was late in the summer and a 2nd strike against me as my apartment faces North and I was only averaging 4.5 hours of direct sunlight on sunny days. Even though this is my first stab at growing I have researched growing marijuana pretty hardcore all my life and knew I was not in a winning scenario. So 4 days ago I made the decision to bring it inside and get the most out of my plants.

So here is my journey in pictures from start to where I am today. I made the sad decision to kill 2 plants early (as I was starting to feel a little too obvious on my balcony and decided to thin out the herd) and now have 2 indoor and allowing a third to grow outside, for experimental purposes.

    QUESTION -
    1. Now that I have moved my plants indoors I am wishing I had used smaller pots. I should be able to handle 4 in my setup but because of the pot size I am limited to 2. Can I transfer to smaller pots at this stage or would the shock cause the plants to have a negative reaction?

Anyways, I will keep updating as it comes along.

  3. Its been a learning process and and expensive one but I realized to do it right you have to invest the money time and energy. My DIY grow tent was standing out in my apartment like an old thumb. Had to upgrade. Really happy I did!

  4. Still need to hook up my Carbon Filter but still waiting for my inline duct fan from Amazon.

  5. Also decided, as you can see from my pictures, to add my outdoor plant into the grow tent. It was doing OK on 4hrs a day direct sunlight, but now its time to really get her growing!

  6. Added some more views of the grow tent so you can get a feel for the size. Its 4 feet wide by 2 feet deep by 5 feet high. Perfect for someone that just wants a small grow of 3 or 4 for personal grow, like myself, but could probably fit 7 to 9.

  7. My electrical - 2 power bars at the top of the tent. Will have enough plugs to cover my entire grow. Again, just much easier and safe compared to my DIY grow box - which I have decided to keep to start my seeds in. Also, if the plant is not too stinky I can use it to veg in.

  8. Nice! I thought everyone seemed to be growing in houses - basements and attics - nice to know someone is in the same lane as me.

    Let's grow these girls!

  9. Added a DIY carbon filter. I'm really hoping this works with such a small grow. If it fails i'm going to have to buy a real one, which I probably should have done in the first place. So far on this first grow journey I have learned you can't cut corners, its best just to spend the money and have all the good equipment from the start, it will really pay off in the long run. I have learned all these lessons by trying to cut corners with DIY grow box, etc.. And realized in the end I'm spending as much money on DIY shit as I would just buying the proper equipment, and always end up having to buy the proper things in the end. Save yourself the time and do it right from the jump.

  10. And I just realized from looking at this carbon filter pic that the strap is cutting off quite a bit of surface where the air would be coming through the filter. I need to fix that, just proves the point I should and will end up just dropping the 50 dollars and getting a real filter.

  11. After 5 weeks in only 4hrs of direct sun a day I finally, after getting my grow tent, was able to get it inside and will be vegging it out until she has filled in and is nice and bushy.

My other 2 have become nice and green and bushy after coming in from outside a week and a half ago.

  12. Added two more CFLs for better coverage of my plants. Also have decided to switch from 24 hours light to a 20 to 4 cycle. Just to conserve energy and give the plants a normal natural feel. I have read both arguments and have come to the conclusion that following the plants natural path makes me feel happier for the plant.

Here are some updated pics of my three plants and setup.

  13. I was given the seeds without a description. It seems to be an indica dominant from the way the plant is growing. Also added my second grow, three babies on the rise!

  14. If anyone reads this maybe you could shoot me some options on a little matter. How on a real bushy plant do I pin the fan leaves to properly allow light to get into the inside growth? Thanks in advance! (I have been using little "kabob" sticks to softly hold the plants leaves where I want but I always wonder if poking into the soil may damage the roots?

  15. you aren't spraying water on the leaves are you? I did this at the beginning it magnifies the light through water and burns the leafs.

  17. all good bud. Just let it be. Weed (along with all plants) know how to grow for millions of years. I made the mistake of fucking with mine to much at the beginning and stunted it's growth im sure. Now I check on it every 2 days for ph and ppm. You have a ppm and ph meter right?
