Conditioning Through Tv

Discussion in 'Science and Nature' started by THEeric, Aug 21, 2014.

  1. So this is a belief I've been holding for awhile now.  That the things we watch on TV condition our behavior and habits.  Specifically, I want to talk about TV shows with laugh tracks.  Sitcoms, etc.  It is my opinion that when the laugh track is played (or even a live audience) the viewer is encouraged (maybe subconsciously) to laugh.

So, I think these TV shows are teaching us through conditioning via laugh tracks what is and isn't funny.

Specifically, on the issue of bullying, I feel that TV shows play laugh tracks at times when one character makes fun of another for being stupid, or weird.

Now, I am not old enough to know about life before TV, and I have only taken a handful of community college level psych classes.

    Thoughts?

Tv is just another tool we use for the same thing.

Before TV we had books, plays, art, you know, social interaction.

Tv just made it more convenient nothing changed really.

That is to say society has always been pressured to conform.

  3. You should be more concerned about the content of news broadcasting influencing your behavior.

Especially when one considers the impact that said viewing might have on one's voting decisions...

  4. Yea exactly. Thanks to the unbiased "news" reporters, Americans supported the slaughter of literally millions of innocents in the.middle east in the pretence of national security

I agree. That why we call it the idiot box. I stopped watching TV about 5 years ago. Even the news is not worth watching. If I do have to watch TV, I want to watch something that will feed my brain like the discovery channell or the learning channell. Animal planet is good too. I love to get high and watch the show called How things are made.

  6. Don't forget the commercials. In almost every commercial it's about buying something.. to buy something you need money.. to get money you need a job.. to get a job you have to do some work beforehand (college, school etc.).. That's
a huge amount of people are already conditioned.

  7. discovery Chanel feeds your brain?

LOL. I know what you mean tho. I love Nova science and some other PBS stuff. Just wanted to hate on discovery

its sad because i love sports.  love to play them and enjoy watching them.  but the culture around sports is becoming almost too much to bear.  the commercialism surrounding top sports is overwhelming. BUY BUY BUY.

I still watch some, but its a lot less than I used to.  And in the next 5 years of my life I could see myself completely phasing TV out of my life.

  9. I agree television has gone to crap.
    Except educational programs.

Tv and other forms of media work execptionally as indoctrination tools.

Fortunately, alternative media is becoming a preffered platform among new generations and the barrier of entry to produce media and distribute it is becoming non-existent.

The TV generation is no longer. It is now the Youtube generation. What comes next we do not know.

  11.
I predict the hashtag and meme generation. I suspect 5-10 years from now all information will come in the form of hashtags and memes and all forums will just be people communicating to eachother with nothing but hashtags and memes.

  12.
Fuck, I hope not, but perhaps you are onto something.

    ...must resist

  13. Perhaps the global network will get to the point where humans effectively act as individual brain cells for a hivemind. Perhaps that is the singularity.

Maybe we've already reached that point.

Every post we make on the internet and every communication we make in real life is a transfer of information that ultimately effects the direction of the human race in general.
