Stealth Pc Grow Lighting

Discussion in 'Lighting' started by nissy420, Aug 21, 2014.

  1. Hey guys, looking to create a little stealth PC grow ala MrGrowPro and all the highly successful custom stealth PC jobbies I've seen around several forums :)

So as for LED lighting it seems people have been getting plenty of success with not a great deal of wattage in this kinda space. I've seen really successful grows anywhere from 20w up to 50w.

I live in NZ and we have literally nothing useful hardware wise so have to go to ebay. These are the cheap and potentially effective solutions I came up with so far, simple LED bulbs @ 10w a piece going into a lamp holder into an extension cord.

Can people with some experience in this area gimme a little advice as to whether this is an okay setup? Thanking you kindly sirs :)

Was looking at the flexi lamp holder thing because it might let me make a better use of the space since I can jiggle the lights around into better positions.

    Thanks fellas!

  2. In a very similar boat gives these guys a try a NZ friend suggested them, although it appears that they dont have low watt LEDs: growandbrew.co.nz

those lights you linked look pretty cool. They seem to have a low profile for a pc grow. any extra headroom you can get in a micro grow makes a huge difference. I think the flexy lightsockets would work really well...that's a good idea!
(I might steal that idea) You could point them down at the plant early on..then later when the buds are all huge you can light them from the side for extra room.

I have a small grow going in a speaker box that uses basic led lightbulbs from the hardware store (lowe's) I'm pretty happy with the results so far. I've seen others having decent results just flowering under cheap warm white led bulbs so I thought I'd give it a try.

  4.
Thanks for the props! You're welcome to any and all of my ideas :p

Yeah I just wanted to double check that those lights would be sufficient really, I don't really know enough about lumens and stuff to figure out if these would be good enough for a micro grow.

Thanks man, are you in NZ too? The main thing I'm curious about for us kiwi's is what soil/nutes to use. If you have any info about that, I'd greatly appreciate it! Thanks :)

  5. Have no a clue with New Zealand specific grows, I think when growing indoors its alot more controlled nutes wise

  6. I think I've heard of some dudes down there using ozmocote or something like that...it's supposed to be pretty good for organic stuffs :)

  7. Thanks guys :)

While we're here in this thread may as well ask if you guys have any recommendations for strains indoor. Looking for low odour, quick harvest and decent yield if possible (maybe asking too much).

I heard Blue Mystic Auto's are pretty decent for all of the above. Big question though, can you SCROG autoflowers? Read some conflicting reports about that. Would definitely be keen to SCROG given the size of the grow space.

  8. Blue mystic is a very solid choice for your requirements, and no you cant really SCROG autoflowers pretty sure.

  9. my super lemon haze is really good in a scrog. She has a little extra stretch and I like that to help fill the screen. Usually when I do a scrog with other strains they get really crowded.  For low odor some of the autos I've grown have a little less odor. Autos have a pretty limited life cycle so you don't want to train them much. You can do a little lst...but you don't want to over train them cuz any stress will lower harvests. They don't really grow long enough to be able to reliably fill out a screen....so just a few tie downs here and there is enough.

  10. You guys have been a great help, thank you! Will be putting an order in for those lights asap, so should be able to get started in a month or so :)

  11. Sorry one last newbie question for those of you with lighting knowledge, the lights I posted don't say anything about lumens, how would I go about calculating how many I'd need to make sure I have enough lumens for the space?

  12. Lumens dont really matter in led since they measure light intensity for humans not plants

  13.
I see. So if I got 40w worth of LED's going in there it would be more or less equivalent to anyone else using 40w of LED?

  14. Depends on alot of things spectrum wise but yeah you'll be outputting 40w worth of light. A 40w led would at a guess be about 80-100w HID if spectrums are spot on.

  15. I'm pretty much basing all my lighting requirements around the specs of the MrGrowPro boxes because obviously they are proven to work and do quite a good job.

Didn't spot these yesterday but these are very close to what MrGrowPro uses (very slightly different wavelength, and 3:1 red:blue ratio instead of 2:1...) http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=301205843008

But those are so freakin cheap...

    I'm lost!

  16. You get what you pay for really, leds are usually expensive so id stick to tried and true products

  17. Generally I agree with that mantra but it's been stated before that the MrGrowPro lights are a generic Made in China kinda thing, pretty much exactly what I linked above.

I mean $20 for 5x15w (75w total), the strips are very space efficient (much more so than the bulbs I linked in the first post I would imagine), I don't see how you can go wrong with this really. But I'd rather defer to the experts than waste time (1 month shipping time) and money getting the wrong thing and failing in my attempt.

  18. By no means am I an expert, its just when it comes to LEDs there are alot of crap on the market. Without the proper lights you essentially shoot yourself in the foot, and in most things in life you shouldn't skimp on the essentials. By all means give them a go and report back, im sure lots are wondering the effectiveness of similar products.

  19. Ugh. This whole thing just makes me want to switch to CFL

I've seen plenty of grows where people are using 20w of CFL or 45w of LED and getting fine results (I'm not talking about commercial/medical grade etc just nice good bud to smoke)... But now I read a few threads on here and the common sentiment is not even to bother unless you're running at least 100w+ from a reputable manufacturer so $150+ for a light.

This forum totally made me question my entire evening of hunting around eBay lol

  20. Look I think it might be easier if you just message me, that way I can fill you in on everything. Just flick me a message and will sort it :)
