Surfing, What Type Of Board Shall I Get?

  1. So i live in the UK and i'm really into surfing, i usually surf in North Devon, at Croyde, Saunton Sands, Woolacombe ect and i'm looking into buying a new board but im not sure what type to go for, i'm currently making a 10ft wooden longboard but i would like another type as well. The waves are usually pretty small, 3-4ft on a good weekend, any recommendations?

  2. Since you've already got the longboard covered, go for a shortboard to just rip around on. Or if you're really looking for something different, a fish would be so much fun on those small waves.

  3. What difference does a fish actually make compared to a normal short board

    Gatty schlop

  4. Short boards are fun, no doubt about it. Shredding, shacking, aerials... you're going to have a good time. But they're not always the most useful for small or sketchy waves. You'll spend more time paddling than riding.

The fish is good for those mushy waves. They're solid like a long board, but smaller like a short board. That makes them easy to paddle and very fast. The trade off is a harder range of motion. You can still rock around like you would on a short board, but its harder and the movements are more limited.

A fish would make more sense if your still learning, I rarely use my shortboard over my fish, I can stand up on the shortboard but I am not ready to have fun on it, so consider your level when choosing as well.

Actually my recomendation is a fish, especially in 3-4 ft ave conditions.  They are ideal in 3-6ft but can be used a bit larger depending on the waves.  I have two fish, a 6'2 and a 6'4 which I enjoy, and I am 5'10.
