Litchi Tomato

  1. Hi.  :)

I started a few litchi tomato seeds indoors in my led cabinet. I was just wondering if anyone has grown them or can give me any tips on growing tomatoes indoors. I'm not really sure how to flower them...my last indoor tomatoes just got really tall and did nothing. Do I have to pollinate them or anything?  How is flowering triggered? Thanks in advance for any info.

I'll update with pics once in a while too if anyone wants to follow along :hello: .I've never grown these before and they look pretty cool. The tomatoes grow in spiked pods and the whole plant is covered in spikes.

the spikes just popped out a few days ago. They're pretty cool looking I think :)   I like how they come right out of the center of the leaves.

  2. Tomato, covered in spikes? Ha, thats pretty cool. Are you growing that under LED's?

  3. yey a comment! Welcome to my superawesome litchi tomato grow mr. vader

yeh I have it in coco under my led panel.  I'll update some pics here in a little bit after my lights come on. :)

  4. here's the 3 little ones. One of them has developed a weird crystallized coating on some of it's first leaves....freaked me out at first...looked like powdery mildew for a sec

  5. That resin does seem dubious, have never seen it before, lol. Those spikes on the plant kinda remind me of the spikes on an eggplant.
I think tomatoes flower despite the sun cycle, but need to be pollinated. If there are flowers that open up, you can take a q-tip and rub it around inside each flower and go from flower to flower w/ the same q-tip. I'm assuming there's nothing in your room to pollinate them (bees, etc) so they need some extra help. Never grew them inside, keep us posted!

  6. awesome steve, thanks for the info.   I also have some blue strawberries going inside. If they actually turn out blue I'll do a thread on em .. :)

  7. Dude, please do. And if you're growing organically, you can just throw all this stuff on the Organic Growing area of the Grasscity Forums and you'll get a whole hell of a lot more attention. Since they threw the organic gardening topic on there, nobody comes over here anymore  :bolt:

  8. I was just about to ask if you still had those strawberries going and then I read your comment haha I think its pretty cool to see other plants grown inside besides just weed. Im excited to see how they turn out!

  9. thanks steve but these aren't organic :O

    I'm excited too Growtrees!
strawberries are still goin..I have some in flower and some in 18/6 and some outside...lol  If any start popping flowers I'll be happy.

One of the litchi tomatoes popped a flower! yey! this means they'll flower under 18/6.  Only one flower has opened so far...but hopefully more do soo and when they do I'll pollinate with a q-tip or small paintbrush...lol I'm really excited to grow a tomato...hehe

  10. wow I would have never guessed tomato flowers look like that. Congratulations man!

  11. That looks exactly like a potato flower, but that's not surprising, they're related.

Growing organically or not, those guys have a lot of knowledge and good advice. :confused_2:

  12. That flower is beautiful, great work.

  13. thanks dudes...I'm sorry but I had to cut these down cut I had some root aphids runnin around. :(

I'll necro this thread early next year when I sprout some more for the garden.

I still have both blue and pineapple strawberries growing still. The blue one is starting to develop some flowers in 18/6....which is awesome :D
