Any Of You Blow Glass Amateur Or Professionally ? Looking To Learn The Trade.

Discussion in 'Marijuana Consumption Q&A' started by snoopdog6502, Aug 15, 2014.

  1. Im thinking of getting a torch, kiln and glasses and other tools and start practicing with borosilicate.

Im looking to get the bigger expensive things out of the way.

    A torch.....
    http://www.glasstorchtech.com/lynx.html

Or a hand torch... not sure if it can be used in a pedestal very well to have dual purpose.

    http://www.glasstorchtech.com/lynxhandtorch.html

I will need a kiln. Nothing huge but big enough to put a small bong in it.

I have a metal working lathe and tooling to build most anything I need to work larger pieces up to 12 inch diameter and 20 inches long.

Anyone care to share how they got started and what were the first things they bought?

  2. Fuckin eh brotha.  I been looking into taking classes lately.  I wouldn't have a clue where to begin without instruction.

  3. The classes are expensive as shit btw. $125 for a 3 hour class.

  4. good for you man, im also thinking of taking some classes, ranging around similar price to what D_Urbmon said. was gonna take some last year but had some untimely shit happen, now im physically able to take classes woo woo, just gotta scrape some funds aside. best of luck man, theres a few solid forums out there which will defninitely point you in right direction.

  5.
I have been a machinist and welder for 24 years so dont think I would have many problems getting the basics down.

Iv made my living as technical professional in engineering and metal working trades as well as a tattoo artist.

It looks like fun been watching youtube a whole bunch. I like thees dudes.

  6. I picked up a used kiln on craigslist for around 200.

Found a 30 foot adapter at a yardsale, paid a few bucks.

They have manual settings but get on youtube and you can find some easy instructions on how to convert your old manual dial to digital. That way you can control temps precisely.

Thats all ive got so far...

  7. Awesome man that cool I would love to start doing that I'm afraid my hands are to shakey for stuff like that
If you weld and work with metal I'm sure you will catch on to this fairly quick

Well damn guys, seems like there is quite a few of us who are very interested.

I have joined the melting pot forum to read and research. A cool group, they understand that pipes and bongs are good money makers that pay the bills but I dont want to post there much.
    http://www.talkglass.com/forum/forum.php

I would like to find some glass tube and rod and just play around, see if a plain propane torch will do anything at all. close a tube and blow a bubble. I used an alcohol burner to bend glass tube before. It cant be that tough.

There are basic kits but they are basic.

I can see it running into a few bucks to get started right.

torches and kilns, hand tools, bottles for fuels.
lots of glass rods and tubes in several sizes and colors, your not making shit without the fucking glass!

Indoor workspace will need ventilation, no trouble there. :D

$2,000 should be a nice startup fund.

What I like is the craftsmanship and working with my hands, Im far too beat up and crippled to work iron anymore. I can make iron rails and fencing for my house but that's it. Maybe blacksmith some more knives.

A doctor told me if I like metal work then get into jewelry making when Im too old to work hard. Work on ounce of gold and silver not a ton of steel.
That is where glass work fits right into my interest and skill set.

  9. Are there any J C's around your area that might offer glass blowing classes?

  10.
    J C's?

  11. Junior C<b>ollege.</b>
<b>I'm old I think they are called community colleges now.</b>

  12.
Hahah also I'm in Canada Land so we have different names sometimes.

I didn't imagine community colleges would offer classes like these.  I guess though some of the more arts oriented ones might?

  13. Here, in Calif, they offer classes ranging from nose picking to pottery classes.

  14. California sounds like heaven to this taiga mon. LOL

  15. Thank you for creating this thread! :) Please keep us updated as to when you start your glass blowing with pics. I am interested to see your work.

    Not within 300 miles.

Well I think I can get it done.  10 months ago I had no real indoor grow equipment. LOL

I was out and about and went by my local welding equipment and gas supplier, just to get a price.

$100 each Oxygen and propane regulators . quality ones not cheap shit I replace in 6 months.

Q sized oxygen tank will cost $260 , full and I own it. About $30 to fill each time.

    Hoses will run me $25

So $300 to fuel the torch, thats all.

So I will round up some money, make a shopping list and knock it off one thing at a time.

  17. When you start getting equipment make a thread fully documenting your progress.

  18.
    I sure the hell will.

Right now Im doing my homework on glass in general.

I did take 2 chunks of glass and weld them together with a propane torch with no oxygen but it sure needs the O2 to make it fast.

The glass was workable like a hard clay at those temperatures.

this video is cool, making an eyeball.

  19. A buddy and I started looking into this when we realised pretty much all the dab rigs for sale in the UK are imported. I'm going to try and get hold of some materials over the next couple of months or so and give it a crack.

  20. I wouldn't mind learning the trade myself - just because all those pretty little pipes I see in the stores are practically collectable, but for now the  best I can do is freeze some ice and throw it on the floor, breaking it into a million pieces and call that art.
