Is There Anything Wrong With Relying On Weed For Musical Creativity?

Discussion in 'The Musician in U' started by Acid Man, Aug 13, 2014.

  1. what do you think?
do you need to be able to express all your talent while sober to be truly talented?

  2. Yes. I recommend becoming be best you can be sober. Use the weed to tap into that "little something extra" we're all looking for. I use weed to help me get in the zone. I don't think about if I'm better sober. I just go exploring and the weed helps open my brain up to the infinite musical pathways we humans walk in our minds. \\m/ :smoke:

  3. cheers dude!
I actually read an interview today with aphex twin that reflects on what you just said, he said that all his music is strictly composed sober, however he does experiment with unmentionables and weed to give him new ideas and visions for when he does compose.

  4. Have you ever listened to Devin Townsend? I just posted about h on another thread lol. His take on tone and composition really opened my eyes and ears to the buffet of sound at our disposal as modern musicians. It's a jungle out there and weed helps me find the trails worth taking ;) I recommend smoking and listening to the album Ki then, if you're into metal, give Strapping Young Lads album City a listen. It cracked my skull wide open and my brain tissue grew impromptu ear-holes so the music could get into my brain faster O_0

  6. You shouldn't have to depend on it, but it sure is one great catalyst for most creative types, myself included.   I find that I get deeper in the zone/groove when I'm baked and more apt to go with the flow and try new things without fear of it sucking or messing up.   Sometimes being (too) high can be counterproductive when you want to execute on all those creative ideas, ie. performing technical pieces or working with studio equipment.

  7. This is what I've found. The actual act of creation can be inhibited by getting "high" (for instance I suck at violin when I'm stoned) whereas I've gotten many conceptual ideas for pieces when I've smoked. To me smoking allows me to de-frag and slow down so that I can allow the ideas for formulate.

If you depend on it to be creative, then there's a problem there. But if you use it to supplement your creativity and to get into the "zone" sometimes, then I don't see any problem with that. I only smoke for creativity when I'm feeling anxious, because when I feel anxious I'm way too critical on myself and end up fixing things that aren't broken, but when I'm high I just kind of go with the flow. I am dependent on something for creativity though, sugar and caffeine, no joke, can't count how many sick melodies and basslines i've made on my sugar/caffeine rushes.
