Abv Oil Fail?

Discussion in 'Weed Edibles' started by fuzzipeg, Aug 13, 2014.

  1. So I did this a little while ago, but was wondering if anyone had any tips or ideas why this didn't work.

I have a MFLB and started with 6 grams of weed: 4 of White Widow and 2 of ChemDawg

Both were super good vaped, high THC content, worked like a charm.

Read up a bit on how to repurpose ABV to get the most out of it.  While I've seen people talk about stuffing the ABV into empty capsules or cooking with the stuff with no further processing, every source said that that was wasting a good chunk of the potential and making an infused oil is the way to go since THC is fat soluble.

So ground up my ABV as well as I could, set my oven to 200F, got a casserole dish out, threw in about a quarter cup of olive oil (only oil I have), stirred in the ABV and put it in for 10 or 15 minutes (can't remember this detail).

Many guides said any longer than that and you might start to break down the THC.

Let it cool on the counter, then filled empty capsules with it.  I took two and waited a half hour, and nothing.  Took two more, another half hour, still nothing.  Took four, nothing.  Etc, ad infinitum.  I finally gave up because it wasn't worth the calories.  If I'm gonna eat that much olive oil with no high, it better be over a delicious piece of baked salmon or something.

tl;dr cooked ~6 grams of ABV in olive oil for 10 minutes at 200F and then put in capsules, nothing is happening

Should I steep it in the oil over night?  Cook longer, or higher temp?  Not so much trying to find how to make oil, since this site is filled with guides, but moreso wanting to know what might have gone wrong and a bit more on the mechanics of how THC dissolves into fats.

  2. I didn't mix it up again after baking, and strained out the ABV particles.  Either of those things matter much?

  3. I usually have great results with ABV.   I put in 1/4 cup of ground ABV to a half cup of oil. I use peanut oil because it takes heat better.  Heat it up gently, stir it a little, simmer for a bit.  If you take something white and dip it in, you'll see the color change. I simmer until the color doesn't seem to be changing any more, strain it through a coffee filter.  It will still look (and taste)  pretty awful.  I use the resulting oil in a store bought cookie recipe as a replacement for butter or oil.

  4.
So you heat it on the stove instead?  I'll have to try that then.  My best guess for my issue it was either not hot enough or not long enough or both.

  5. Yeah, I heat it stove top, medium high for 10-15 min. But I'm using a lot of the stuff.  Be prepared for an unholy stench.

I'm wondering if it will work cold, over a long period of time.

  6. You shouldn't have had much of a problem with the heat since abv is already decarbed, you can practically eat the stuff raw and it should still affect you. I've read somewhere that people can have different affects with edibles, depending on how your stomache digests it. Have you had any experience with edibles in the past?

If you're putting the oil into capsules to ingest then you should use vegetable glycerin (glycerin is different than oil). You don't even need capsules for that, just an eye dropper. It works either way but it's better to ingest VG than a large amount of cooking oil. Second problem is that 15 min is not nearly enough time to effectively infuse thc into oil/butter. I normally cook mine on very low heat for at least an hour. Some people suggest keeping the mixture on simmer for several hours. If you have a crock pot, that's a good way to keep it on low heat for practically the entire day. Considering it's AVB that you're using, you'll want to let the mixture sit as long as possible. Hope that helps dude!

Edit: Use a stove or crock pot, not an oven. You want to stir the mixture somewhat frequently while it's infusing the thc and it'll be pretty difficult in an oven. People do the baking sheet thing to decarb their weed without oil in the pan, which makes the thc more active and available. You don't need to do this with AVB because that happened when it was vaped.

  8. Never had edibles before, might have a beast of a stomach though.

Thanks, I'll definitely take that into account and try it out.  I'm super dry right now, so really wishing I didn't fuck up with my ABV because I'm gonna be out until mid-September.  Maybe a little addicted, but I think moreso I just miss having the option of a quick toke when super stressed instead of other crap that makes me feel like shit the next day.  Having no experience with this at all beforehand, sounds like I need to give it as much time as possible.

Thanks to all who contributed, you guys are super awesome!   I'll try and remember to report on how all your tips worked out next time I have some ABV and decide to do this again.

  9. If you still have your AVB oil you can save this.
    1. Cook it after it is well covered with tin foil and your Pyrex cover after adding 1/2 tsp of soy lethicin found at whole food type stores.for 45 min.
    2. Take it out of the oven and let it cool.
    3. Mash it with the back of a fork.
    4. Freeze over night, then thaw.
    5. Back in the oven w another 1/2 tsp of soy lethicine @ 220 for 45min.

Cool strain and you will have about 1/4 of effective oil.

To figure potency for caps. # of 00 caps * by 6grams of bud. Ex 60 caps would equal 10th of a gram per cap. Not extremely potent with ABV. You can titrate a dose to see how much you need. With ABV it is usually 2x as much as uncapped bud.

    Happy Mediables
