  1. Article from policymic

"Witnesses claim one thing: His hands were raised in surrender when a Ferguson police officer gunned him down on Saturday. Yet officials paint him as a violent troublemaker who lunged into a police car and assaulted the officer before fleeing.

Brown's mother, Lesley McSpadden, says the 18-year-old had just "graduated high school and ... didn't bother nobody," according to CNN.

All this is heartbreaking. But one thing is certain: It helps the killer's case to portray Mike Brown as a villain.

Fortunately, Twitter is having none of it. The Root reports that users recognize the tactics of the powerful, namely how the media picks the most incriminating or easily misinterpreted victim photos possible when portraying murdered black boys and men.

We saw it with Trayvon Martin. We see it again with Mike Brown.

Using the hashtag #IfTheyGunnedMeDown, people are flooding social media with photos mostly likely to fit the "black male as thug" narrative - ones the media would presumably use in case of their demise."

I don't have much to say other than the media is a powerful thing. It's just, weird to see. I don't understand why they do what they do, but I'm proud of the people fighting back.

  3. ....what

  4. Didn't they portray Martian as a goodie goodie.on the news, then photos of him as a "thug" came out? Anyone can wear nice clothes, just like anyone can wear bad clothes.

But Ya, see how this thread plays out

  5. Hopefully the FBI straightens this one out...

  6. It shouldn't play out too bad, i think it's pretty reasonable.
I saw the thuggish photos first but it definitely varies between news channels like fox and cnn.

  7.
yeah man let the government taste the wrath of their twitter campaign

  8. I take it for what it is, change has happened through internet protesting. Places like change.org specialize with that.

Also the media likes to pay attention to twitter and Facebook, if it becomes a trending topic it usually will be mentioned.

  9.
and what has change.org ever accomplished?

  10. How come I don't have any thug/gangsta photos? What photos would the media use of me if I were black, and got gunned down by police officers?

  11. You do realize the police now do this to everyone they murder in cold blood, not just black people...
People should be fighting impunity so that corrupt and violent police officers go to jail because of their crimes, not the color of their skin.

  12. The media has its own agenda. They parade around a murdered black person by a white person, but sweep the story of a murdered white person under the rug if it was committed by a black person.

agreed. until there is more accountability on their part things arent going to change.

  15. He graduated highschool? Model citizen

  16. You know what I find sickening? There is a little social media game trending right now "IfTheyGunnedMeDown". It's a bunch of black people posting pictures on Twitter/Instagram of how they think the media would portray. It's gross that people would use the death of this boy to make such a game. Not to mention "White people aren't allowed to play." Since this shooting, I've seen tons and tons of racist posting online, and the majority of it is coming from black people.

Also, How does this seem logical? Innocent black man shot dead for supposedly stealing something. Let's show the media that we loot stores and destroy our own communities when the world is watching us and then complain how the media portrays our people.. Fucking irrational animals who are using the death of this man to loot stores and spread violence.

I support protesting but once it turns to rioting, that's unnecessary.

I'm not American so I don't really see race in the same way as you guys, but I saw this story and it didn't strike me like anyone was trying to portray him as a villain...I think you're reading too far into it, in fact I'd say the opposite.

Plus, I wouldn't really call a graduation cap and gown as 'thuggish' or as 'a villain' How dare he graduate!

Well there's your problem right there. Flooding social media... Nobody really gives a shit or they would be out in the streets storming the police department or at least rioting.

Everyone's a rebel/activist when it comes to 'tragedies' like this one, but nobody really goes out and does anything to make change.

Social Media does not make real world changes...

  19. Nobody really cares, everyone just sits there judging, flooding social media, and further perpetuating the belief that no body truly gives two shits, but they want to pretend that they do, to make themselves feel better about their consensual retardation rapefest
