What is up Grass City! Man it's been a while since I have done a journal, or grown a plant for that matter. Got a few changes this run; first and foremost being organics :metal: . It's my first attempt off the bottle so I'm going to be asking some questions, but if ya see something I don't or have a suggestion, please chime in. I'm here to learn, not show off.

All these elements should be brought together on a common ground of confessed ignorance, with a desire to be constructed, freely encouraging talk and opinions, and reaching out desperately for anyone who has special experience in any way connected to address them
            –Frank Lloyd Wright

    The Setup:
    (1) 2'x2'x3.5' grow space
    (1) 240w Blackstar LED (135w actual draw)
    (1) 5gal SIP bucket w/ 4gal BAS soil and 1gal CocoLoco
    (3) PC Cooling fans for exhaust [(2) 120mm “low noise”… err… low cfm PC fans and (1) 80mm PC fan]
    (1) DIY pencil cup carbon scrubber
    (1) Mini oscillating tower fan for air circulation

I have the light mounted above the grow space such that the heat sinks are outside the tent and the lens is inside which allows those little fans to keep everything nice and cool.

    Strain:
Humboldt Seed Organization – Amherst Sour Diesel

    Where we're at now:
So after ordering all new nutes and new pH pen I decided to try water only organic. Reason being I was going out of town for about a month and wanted to make it easy on the friend I had babysitting the plant. Coming from coco, I wanted to give a product called Coco Loco (coco, ewc, guano, and some mycos) a try and the hydro store had some so I went for it.

Not realizing ppm was fairly useless in organic growing, I checked the media before dropping the bean in. I was getting runoff at 3,500 ppm. So I flushed the hell out of it and basically converted it back to plain coco. Growth was pretty slow until I repotted in unflushed Coco Loco. That brought on a little growth spurt then slowed back down and yellowed out pretty quick showing multiple signs of deficiencies.

So, Coco Loco is not going to cut it in a water only operation. But some Moonshine Hazes that were germed in it unflushed grew much faster and healthier than mine.

In comes Build A Soil with 4 gal of soil (might have been a little less than that but I didn't measure), transplanted her into a 5 gal bucket, mixed in a little extra coco loco to bring the level of the pot up, filled the reservoir with some aquarium water, and she exploded and greened right up. Go BAS!

It seems like a pretty solid germination method. I took a little 4"cut yesterday and stuck it in about 2" of the loco to see how it clones, Probably should have given her about 4" of medium, but I'm sure once she starts stretching there will be a few other cuts for me to experiment with.

  3. Happy Friday everyone.

Was checking on the lovely lady and thought I would share some pics of the setup.

I'd also like to get some more silica in there to start hardening those branches in place, is ProTekt alright for organic soil or is there some tea I should be looking into? The soil is about 70% BAS soil.

Next up is feeding SIP girls teas. The soil is always wicking water up to maintain a nice moisture level; wouldn't top feeding over saturate the soil and slow her down for a few days?

    On to the setup!

If you are running LEDs and realized they don't run as cool as they are hyped up to, this is a great solution. Also, that rigged up fan box is not going to see the fruits of its labors this round as I'm working on a much smaller, more streamlined approach to small scale air filtration. It will house all the fans and replaceable carbon cartridges in one compact unit.

  4. First! Looks good Case.. I think I might be getting some Amherst here soon.. cool that I get to watch yours first.

Subbed up for sure my friend! :D :smoke:

  5. Some nice looking girls there my friend, when are you going to drop the screen on that bitch or are you still planning on doing any screen dropping?

  6.
    Good to have you aboard!

I read that and had to post a youtube video of this nick swardson comedy bit that would have been fitting. I just spent over an hour looking for that damn video... And who ever thought weed makes you less productive...

The Amherst has been great. I don't know if its the whole water only LITFA thing but I feel like she is growing herself and I'm just here to watch. She grows like a champ.

That is unclear, at this time.

For now I don't really need it as the plant hasn't grown much beyond the rim of the bucket and the secondary branches haven't breached the level of the canopy yet. I'll probably end up putting the screen to her in a couple of days though.

  7. long time no see case! how was the water cured bud from the last coco grow? Ive heard great stuff about build a soil and the improvement of that plant is really saying something about it too haha. That 5 gal sip is huge in your small space! might wanna look for square containers for those babies whenever they get in there. square 5 gallon buckets exist and you can sometimes get them for free from restaurants. You could probably have vegged a bit longer but I have heard that sour diesel is a stretcher. Subbed! come visit me in my thread bud  :bongin:

  8. Dingus, good to 'see' ya man. I found the pics I meant to post after the cure on my camera a couple of days ago. The LSD was AMAZING!   Definitely my favorite bud I have ever smoked. It was sooo smooth and the high was great. It hit you right in the face/brain. I've heard the term skull thumper before, I think that fits. The first thirty min the high is a little disorienting and just pulsates right in your head (sounds off putting but it is so great). Then it calms down a bit to an alert/relaxed social high. I've got one bud tucked away for special occasions.

    water cure (3).jpg

There is an idea. I could probably fit two square buckets in there. I know kitty litter comes in a decent sized rectangular container.

I saw how stretchy SD can get and since its my first run with the ASD I wanted to error on the side of caution. Maybe next time. The babies are Moonshine Haze that @InternationalHarvester is running. I'll be getting cuts but those gals are living under his Solarstorm 880. The only thing I was thinking was maybe getting my little 3/4gal square pots out and putting one in each back corner and running some small indicas with a 1 week veg.... but that would require me to actually do something in the cab, I'm really digging these water only SIPs.  :smoke:

  9. I totally feel you on saving some good buds for special occasions. I have one fat 10 inch long 9 grammer saved of CBD critical mass left. Skull thumper sounds intense! I've heard the LSD is very heady haha. You could make mini sips for those 3/4gal. Actually, what if you got a tray that fit any number of those 3/4 gal square pots perfectly and then bottom watered the tray as a whole? its like the mini SOG sip setup off top haha. I need to build some sips for my fall indoor when I move back inside from the greenhouse.

I've heard and read great stuff about the solarstorm! its super expensive though.

You mean something like this? :ey:

Every couple of days I would walk into the tent, dump a liter or two into the tub and that was that. Worked great. Only thing that wasn't so great were the genetics, duno why I ran them.

  11. yesss exactly! ahh ya genetics is pretty key. what were the genetics of these?

    Nirvana NL.

Their mom re-vegged during flowering, so I took some cuts and trashed the mom. Should have just planted new beans, but I was naive. They flowered almost 100 days and never really filled in or finished off. Buds were about 70% air. I had to eventually cut em because my plants in veg were hitting the lights. These gals were disastrous wild things that no amount of super cropping could tame. Here they were at day 88.

But I have no right to talk smack because just yesterday, thinking I was out of bud, I stumbled on a tupperware of popcorn that I had been using for edibles. I forgot about it at least a year and a half ago... Two years later and she is still coming to my aid in times of need. Now thats a stand up lady right there.

  13. wow your nirvana NL was nothing like the way mine was. Mine was mostly indica with a short flowering time, and very little smell I read that for some strains that won't bulk up you can turn your photoperiod to 11/14 or 10/14 and thy should begin to swell. Usually that only happens with sativas. If I remember correctly though, NL has a lot of landrace sativa ancestry and So it looks like you got a old school Sativa pheno.

Haha that's awesome that she came thru in the end when you could really use the bud.

  14. She could have been a little more sativa-esque, she isn't a good pheno for sleep if I remember correctly. Yeah I probably should have knocked it down to a ten hour light cycle. Didn't really think about it at the time. That gal had very little smell to her as well, I don't remember if I even used a carbon filter for her.

  15. Hello. Welcome to today's update.

I decided to put the screen on her. The only problem with it is that I missed and landed it off center. I'm at the edge on 2 sides with 2 sides ready to fill. Maybe I'll fix it, or maybe I'll just start letting them grow up around the edges and keep the middle lower… maybe it will better match the light distribution of my little light… or maybe I'm just lazy.

The clone I took is looking good. It's either the fastest rooted cutting I have ever seen or when I cut it, it looked at me and said said “roots? I don't need no stinking roots” and kept on growing using stored nutrients or something. It's definitely about an inch taller than when I took it.

Well now I just feel dirty. I think I'm going to go take a shower ...  :hide:

  20. made my way over here

the rebound of that plant after going into the BAS soil is awesome.

    nice work, dude!
