Car Trouble... Any Stoner Mechanics?

Discussion in 'Planes, Trains & Automobiles' started by thedailydaren, Aug 7, 2014.

  1. I have been having the same problem with my cobalt since bringing it home. It only happens occasionally, more frequently within the last week and most intensely this afternoon. Lemme start off by saying im a new driver as far as a stick shift and my knowledge of vehicles is sparse at best. Anything anyone suggests will be super appreciated -- im lost right now.

    Excuse my rudimentary driving terms.

Today I stopped at a traffic light and sat in neutral. When the light changed, I disengaged the clutch, shifted into first, and pressed on the gas until that "catch" point, at which the car is supposed to have a little more power. Well it felt sluggish but I am an imperfect driver, assumed it was me, disengaged the clutch and went to second. Again it felt sluggish and I never felt the catch. At this point my RPMS are at 3k. Not feeling any power and cruising at 20, i shift to third and still get no power. As I continue to shift in search of a working gear my RPMS dont drop. Let me explain as best I can for clarity : when i let off the gas they fall slowly but no matter what gear I go to they never fall low enough for the car to get that usual jolt of forward motion.

I started smelling burning and pulled over immediately before red lining. Turned off the car and called for a ride and advice. By the time my ride came the car was working fine again and later on tonight I just drove around the block without a problem.

Someone said transmission computer. Clutch. Flywheel.

Does anyone know what could be wrong? Please ask any questions if it wasn't clear. Thanks again for your time
Gonna go smoke a blunt n try to relax -- life always throw in me lemons

  2. Check your tranny fluid, I would guess you have and leek and it is low/empty.

I always take it to a mechanic to find the problems as I don't know much about cars.

    if I'm understanding correctly
It sounds like your clutch is toast
Do your Rpms go up fast but not your speed?
Also could be clutch slave cylinder not engaging clutch fully or a bent clutch fork

Edit: odd it went away in that case it does make me think it some hesitation with the engine most like cause by faulty sensor because a clutch issue would not be intermittent.
If it went away just keep an eye on it look for any symptom that may come back.

  5. Can't "check" oil in manual trans only way would be to open the fill plug on the trans and top it of till if flows out or just change it completely though that does not sound like your issue.

Does your clutch feel any different?
    Engaging late or chattering?

  9. It really sounds like your clutch. Next time you smell the burning, try to see if its coming from the engine or the trans. Was your engine coolant at normal temp? If it was, I think it could be the clutch but that is only my guess. Your clutch could also be slipping, and the friction could create extra heat, leading to that burning smell

yep clutch is toast by the sounds of it. did it smell like someone doing a burnout on an off fish?

cold engine: worn all the way to the metal bits on the clutch, when cold (small) it will engage. as it heats up the metal in the clutch expands and will just slip.

  11. time for a new clutch

  12. Everything and everyone's been pointing to the clutch and from what Ive read I seemed to have glazed the clutch riding in traffic before all this happened. It hasn't happened to me again yet

  13. I checked my tranny fluid. It was thick and white. He/she (the tranny) did not mind me checking at all.

  19. Man o man you burnt the clutch you know how to use the gas like feather the throttle and then let up the clutch slowly only first you gotsaa do that the other gears you can let out quite a bit faster.
