My brother knows I'm planning on starting a grow soon, so he gave me some seeds that a random friend gave him last year. I was originally planning on buying some specific strains overseas, but now that I have these free seeds, I wonder if I should just see how the mystery seeds end up growing. I started soaking them today, but I wonder what the chances are that it'll be a useful strain. I'm only growing for personal medicinal usage, and I don't care if my yields are bad the first year. Mostly these first few months will be just experimental. I'm growing indoors in an established aquaponics system with 2 x 600w HPS lamps. What do you think? Since I'm not in a rush, and since I'm not going for maximum production, is it worth the effort to wait and see if these seeds end up to be decent? Thanks

I would just order some seeds from a reputable breeder. Experiments are fun and all but I would rather have stable genetics than waste grow space on what amounts to some other growers screwup.
I'm using bag seed , and I'm glad I did . I started with 22 plants after males and hermies & early bloomers I'm down to 14 dam fine specimens . End up with 9 different strains . Now I pick and choose for clones knowing what is already in the genetics .. Happy days ahead

I'm currently doing it. Why not? In my only opinion, the only thing that makes schwagg weed is not schwagg seeds, but instead schwagg growing techniques! I thought that sounded pretty good, I'll have to write that down...
I'm growing a random bag seed as well. I was worried about wasting time and energy on it if it turned out to be male but I did gain knowledge so it wouldn't be a total loss. It's been under 12/12 for a week and still no sign of sex. I read females take longer to show so hopefully it ends up being a little girl. If you have time no reason not to. Hey free seed equals free experience. I ordered all of my strains that I would like to grow right of the bat. Then I remembered I had a bag full of seeds, all random. I pop 13 that 13 turned into 4 healthy plants and that 4, 3 where male. I ended up with one girl. She was one of the smoothest smokes I have ever had. I got lucky and she hemie on a bud so i got 7 seeds off her. As well as drying and packaging. Those guys just leave it out in the sun to dry the shit out of it, killing taste and smell, then just jam it into a vac sealer (if they even use a sealer).

Awesome! Thanks, everyone, for the replies! Your plants look beautiful. Now I'm excited to grow these. Some of them have little roots peeking out already. I'm gonna transfer them to a wet towel now, before putting them in some rockwool. My carbon scrubber and air-cooled reflectors (8" ducts) should be coming early next week.
if root is showing plant it now wet towels is just to get the root out, and if root gets too big u might break it :/
You can get a decent yeild of dense, high quality nuggets from ANY female weed plant grown in optimum conditions, no matter the strain. %99 of shitty mid grade weed is from someone who either didn't have the knowledge or patience to stick it in a jar and wait a month. Is it common to see aquaponics grow journals? I tried searching the forum for them, but didn't find much. Part of my experiment is to see if I can get good production with my aquaponics system. I'm not looking to get maximum yields. If I get 25% less production because I'm using aquaponics instead of hydroponics or soil, I wouldn't mind that at all.
I remember when I was about 16 (over 20 years ago) and was so desperate to grow the forbidden plant. I got so desperate, I germinated the hemp in my auntie's bird seed. The seeds all looked slightly different and in my wisdom, I thought they were different strains. So I set up this little op on my parent's bathroom window-sill (because the glass was the distorted kind so people couldn't see you pooping or growing weed) to see if they came out different. When my parents asked, I told them I was growing tomatoes, but I got kind of got busted by customs, well my neighbours (who worked as customs) to be exact. They had popped in for a cup of tea, and needed to use the bathroom. They grassed me up to my mother and I had to destroy the plants. It was hard to look them in the eyes afterwards.
