I plan on adopting a puppy in the next few months, and I want a dog breed that is fairly active and can go on long hikes when it gets old enough. I had my heart set on a boxer, however I'm learning now that they don't tolerate hot or cold temperatures well. I live in the northeast U.S. where it can get hot and humid during the summer, and I especially enjoy hiking during this season. Btw, a medium sized dog would be ideal for me since I live in a condo.

TLDR: What is a moderate to highly active dog breed that can handle warm temperatures?

  2. I have an Australian Cattle Dog, also known as a Blue Heeler. They are bred for activity and I'm not sure there is a climate that this dog wouldn't thrive in, though my particular dog is pretty chill. A result of an abusive first home. We hike all the time through the Outback.

I would also recommend the blue heeler as I grew up with them or I could also recommend a pointer cross

  5. Can't go wrong with a lab or a lab mix. My mix(lab x boxer) loves hiking with me an my girl. She doesn't even need to be on a leash anymore. She's a great dog. Our new puppy(8 month old border collie) also likes hiking. She still needs her leash but we are working on that!

You really can't pick a bad dog for hiking with, except maybe a small little ankle bitter. My cousin has 2 Saint Bernards and a Bernese mountain dog and they all like coming for hikes as well.

When it's humid and you hike just bring lots of water for both you and the dog and they will be fine. Also some quick breaks along the way never hurt! Also look for trails with streams running along them and bring them for a quick swim along the way. That cools them right off!!

  6. I can't speak from experience, I've only owned a lazy smelly shitzu. But I've always dreamed of owning a lab when I have my own house

  7. Yep I agree a Lab or Golden great dogs
a lil on the bigger size though

  8. Borders are amazing dogs but not as easy as some can be. My lab mix is perfectly content sitting on the couch while I watch a movie or take a nap after work. Our border on the other hand is always GO GO GO. We bring her to swim until she is exhausted and then we think she is done and she could keep going. We brought her on a 4 mile walk one day. Got back to the house and she was ready for more. And they are damn smart. Sometimes to smart!!

So they are great dogs but only of you have a house with some land for them to run. Would no recommend for a condo/apartment.

  10. Jack Russell Terriers adapt best to human nature. A good example of this would be "milo" from the movie the mask  with Jim Carrey.

  11. Hmm I've thought about a boxer/lab mix...that might be good for me.

  12. I'd have to say a Lab or even a Begeal (sp?). I've got a lazy English Bulldog...

  13. My dog loves to go for walks and hikes, she is very active. She is a Border Collie/ Australian Shepherd/ Blue Heeler. The kindest dog I have ever met and is extremely smart. I couldn't find a pic of her on my computer ,but this dog looks quite a bit like her.

  16. Dude or Dudet I've always dreamed of having a great Dane when I have myself established and start a family I like how there a protector and very watchful something that puts me at ease as I want my family and home protected by that and the 2nd amendment.

    Peace.

  17. Great Pyrenees are great, will walk with you anywhere but will also walk off down the trail without you whenever they feel like it because that's all they do. Even the smartest and best trained pyrs think that all the land they can see is their territory

Australian shepherds are cool, mine loves hiking in very rough terrain even though he's quite a bit overweight. As long as we bring him water and take a lot of breaks he's good cause they have a lot of hair and it gets hot.

My border collie lab mix is an expert hiking dog, smartest I've ever had, used to jump off of and onto rock ledges and run up steep rock faces without hesitation. Never had to tell her to do anything, she just knew what to do. Wonderful dog

  18. Most dogs will do great on a trail but I'd choose a short hair breed.

I take my shiba on hikes and she absolutely loves it. Every stream or puddle she jumps into.

She only gets to about 25 lbs, was thinking of getting her a pack so she can bring her own damn snacks and water lol
