Does Marijuana Maintenance Help Stop Drinking?

Discussion in 'Medical Marijuana Usage and Applications' started by spliffhitter77, Aug 4, 2014.

  1. Just wondering if smoking pot has helped anyone else to quit problem drinking like me. Who am I kidding. I am an alcoholic. Bad for years and years. Mind you I have drank myself out of job, house and family more than once. I am getting older now.."turning 37" and I have spent years in and out of AA got a sponsor and even worked the steps. But in the end I always go back out and drink! So about 3 months ago I made a radical decision to give marijuana maintenance a fair try. I say fair try because I would always try to switch to weed in my active alcoholism with failure. This time I had over 9 months no drinking and I could feel a relapse was coming. I know this feeling all to well and eventually I cave in. So I bought a 1/4 oz and I began smoking weed and quit AA. 3 months later here I am happy and still not drinking and in a couple days I will have a full year without a drink! And that is a very first for me! It has greatly helped with a number of issues including anxiety, depression and overeating. It has truly become good medicine for me. I view it as medication for me. Is this a temporary patch? Could it work long term? Does anyone have experience with this?

  3. This February I hit 22 years clean and sober. I was spending about 1k a month to manage my bipolar depression. I was struggling to pay for the meds and wanted to try weed after being clean so long. The moment I hit it I knew I was onto something. The weed just made everything click. I have totally cleaned myself of the other meds and strictly use pot now. But, the disease theory of dependence would tell u the pot isn't doing anything but tricking you. I'm not so sure. I think weed has been controlling my bipolar and keeping me on an even keel. I still don't drink or use anything but weed. Your results may and most likely will differ, be careful and use your mind.

  4. I had a problem with unmentionables. Started smoking herb more regularly and it took me right past my 3 month relapse phase. Got a great career going right now and cannabis will be a huge part of my life from here on out. My first harvest is fast approaching! Anyway herb saved me. Sounds dramatic but true.

  5. 410 days without a drink of alcohol. I did a year with no herb,

Now I like a dab a day. One kicks my ass.

  6. I wouldn't say im a problem drinker, ever since smoking on a regular basis being drunk has gotten boring. now it's just a couple beers once every blue moon for me.

  7. I don't have any personal experiences with using MJ maintenance for an addiction, but it's great to hear that you have.

I do have to ask this though: Will having one drink send a recovering alcoholic into relapse, or is it multiple drinks? I suppose it varies from person to person, though

    Happy toking!

  8. Most REAL alcoholics simply cannot have ONE drink... Just as the saying goes.."One is too many and a thousand is not enough"

  9.
thats how i am. i dont really drink that frequently and dont ever really crave it, but one drink = me drinking as much alcohol is available and blacking out.

  10.
My experience was similar, but my addictions were more to opiates, amphetamines, anti-depressants and gambling (and I drank too much). Since I started using MMJ, I've gotten off all the pharmaceuticals and rarely gamble or drink. Eventually I also started eating well and exercising regularly, which took my recovery to an even higher level. It doesn't feel like a temporary patch

  11. I too recently began eating clean and cross training. Thanks for the input my people.

  12. this is odd. I have run out of cannabis and would drink a few glasses of red wine at night instead and liked it and recommend it. it is all about balance and moderation.

  13.
You're right that usually it's "all about balance and moderation." Moderation is not always possible for some people who were addicted to a substance like alcohol or opiates. Even moderate amounts of the substance can re-trigger the addiction.

  14. See I'm tryina get my mom on this but with cigarettes

  15. My experience is similar to everyone else's here. With 2 DUI I always believe alcohol was the problem but I was the problem.I been drinkin since I was a teenager. I smoke pot to get high it was never an issue for me. The only solution for me was not to worry about it so much. I guess moderation is key if u can do it. If not at least u dont gotta worry about dui or hangovers or doin something your gonna regret when u drink. Weed is better for u.

  16. UPDATE: I have been using marijuana maintenance for 6 months now. Going strong and it has a profound effect of deterring the drink. Miracle actually. I have a mature view, a medical approach. Life is good. Better than ever actually!

  17. I quit smoking and became an alcoholic

  18. 14 years ago,my doc told me i was killing myself with alcohol,i was 47 then.So i asked for something to help me stop drinking, but he said there was nothing and it was down to my will power.
I had smoked weed off and on for years,so decided to give that a go as my medicine.
I also suffer from severe osteo-arthritis and have been unable to work since 2001,also depression crept in.
The weed helped with all these problems,i still go out for a few pints, but nothing like i used to be
I think i can honestly say that MJ saved my life.
Ive been growing my own for 3+ years now,and loving it,my life has a new meaning now, thanks to MaryJane.
Theres a lesson there for our governments and our doctors, but whilst the lunatics run the asylum we are Donald Ducked.
    Good Luck

  19. Thanks for the update! That's awesome.

    Well done to you!

I also have had much success in quitting prozac, smoking cigarettes, drinking... and now I'm even working on a plan to cut down on my recreational use of cannabis! lol it's so good, it's helping me fight my psychological addiction to itself!

But, it still really comes down to accepting that we are changing for the better, and embracing the benefits provided by the buddah, so good to us!

  20. the alcohol brings darkness. The medicine brings about light. Come back.
