I bought a 4 lb bag of Safer brand Diatomaceous Earth from Home Depot, and i'm wondering if it's okay to use since it does not appear to say food grade anywhere. Here's a link to it http://www.homedepot.com/p/Safer-Brand-4-lb-Diatomaceous-Earth-Ant-and-Crawling-Insect-Killer-51702/202743025 It is OMRI listed and is formulated to use in gardens, according to the bag. I have heard people say you should't use a brand that isn't food grade though. Anyone with experience want to shed some light? I want to use it to get rid of an aphid infestation in my veg cab, and then use it weekly as a preventive in veg only.
Alright so I just found the official webpage http://www.saferbrand.com/store/insect-control/51702 Says that it's made from food grade DE but there's an additive that attracts bugs, so ingesting is still not a good thing. In one of the reviews a person claimed that their dog licked up some of it and it was totally fine, they took it to the vet just to be sure too. I guess I answered my own question haha. This brand seems safe as long as it's used during veg only.
The stuff they sell at Home Depot and Lowe's etc. is normally marketed as an insect killer and priced as such. You can get 25 lb bags of food grade DE at any feed store. It is fed to horses as a dewormer. One bag cost me $12.95 where one bag of the "insect killer" DE costs about that much and is 1/6th the amount.
Thanks for the tip. I haven't opened it yet so i'll probably take it back. I'll check some places around me. I'm in an area where there is an abundance of feed stores so it should be no problem to get.
