Wiring A Mogul Socket For An Hps

Discussion in 'Lighting' started by thedrunkenclam, Jul 31, 2014.

  1. I recently purchased a 400W HPS bulb off Amazon, not realizing it would take a special socket. I am currently using a red 250W Heat Lamp for my plant, which I don't believe is a very good alternative at all and could possibly be detrimental to the life of the plant.

I went to a few places and none of them had any sockets for this size except the last place, where they gave me just the socket with two wires with caps. Now I have absolutely no idea how to wire this up, so if someone could point me towards the right direction with this, preferably fast and easy and local, I'd appreciate it.
The socket is a Mogul LH200, rated up to 1500W.

  2. You can't just wire a socket... You need a ballast to power that bulb...

  3. I assumed as much, think of me as a complete idiot in regards to wiring. How much do you think this will cost, and what will I need?

  4. Just better to buy to buy a 400 watt combo or something from ebay. Or craigslist. That way you will get ballast, wing w/socket and cord, and usually a my and hps bulb. Usually runs about 120.00 us dollars. If you go piece by piece, you gonna spend just as much.
A infrared heat bulb is doing nothing for your plants.
Also if your looking into "wiring" stuff, wire a string of normal Edison sockets, and just use CFL's.. And that probably would be the cheapest option. And you can place bulbs all around plant. Many options..

  5. Sounds great. I don't want to be a bother, so do you think you could point me in the right direction where any questions I may have might be answered? I've been browsing the forums a bit and I see a lot of people work with smaller spaces than I at first thought, I have a closet with about a 22x64x36 available space.

Would I be better off replacing the heat lamp with a regular household bulb? I also have an LED bulb, not sure of the wattage there.

  6. Yes you would be better off with a household bulb if it is a cfl.
You could go to your local hardware store where you live, buy 10 regular sockets and a 25 foot extension cord, and cut and splice sockets in. Then just use some regular household 23-40 watt cfl lights and strategically place around plants. Google "cfl setup".. And get rid of heat lamp ASAP..
