How Would You Fare If All Electronics Quit Working

Discussion in 'General' started by ByBySucker, Jul 30, 2014.

  1. Many people rely heavily on electronics for many things. If they all quit working, what do you think would happen and what would you do?

  2. I'd die of boredom. I need my internet for entertainment and porn.

That would also probably mean the power grid would go down since all the load sharing computers, sensing devices, and actuators would be non-functional. I can almost guarantee the federal government would declare Marshall Law within a couple days of no electricity. Food processing and storage rely heavily on electrically driven refrigeration systems. Things wouldn't be pretty, and every enemy of the technologically over-dependent nation knows it.

Did it fall of 2012, late October into November. Hurricane Sandy. Lost all power for 7 days. Most of my state did.

Even my stove is electric, so no way of making heat or cooking at indoors. Ate cold food from cans, and read by candle light for 7 days.

By the end of it, was about 50-52 degrees inside my house depending on time of day. Which doesn't sound too cold, but feels fackin' cold.

Saw people fighting at gas stations over getting gas for their generators and cars. The lines were so long that getting gas was something that lasted a 45 minutes-2hours. Most of my area was flooded anyway, so we were basically trapped in my town. The gas was really so we could run the cars and charge our phones. They were the only way to know what was going on, and to get in touch with PSE&G for updates.

Grocery stores were picked clean in the days before it even hit. I was lucky I'd stocked up on bottled water, batteries, and canned items in the week prior. That said, those items would have only lasted for so long if it had gone on longer than a week. Thankfully just as things were starting to look bleak, the power came back.

It was probably as close as you could get to the first week of a Zombie apocalypse or world ending event.

  5. that is what I fear, things could crumble so easily and people would not know what to do .

unfortunately, your fears are fully justified - and that's not merely a conspiracy theoretic opinion.

I've been practicing foraging herbs and fishing since I was like 4 years old. I'd fare fine. I've done it before, anyway.

  11. Not that some people couldnt fair, the strong would survive... it would just be a very very different world. And alot would not survive

I'd shed my clothes and become a caveman

  13. Eventually the diesel will run out for the nuclear power plants back-up generators. Which will mean the rods that are stored in refrigerated water so they don't overheat will begin to warm up and evaporate the water... and then everywhere surrounding them will be wiped out by a huge explosion 500 times the size of Hiroshima. So I'd probably die after 2-3 days since there is a plant 40 miles from me.

  14. I'd be alright. I'd spent more time out in nature and reading books.

  15. Think I would manage fine, not sure about my neighbour and his dialysis machine would though lol

  17. does this mean cars wont work? because as long as i can have my Metro, i can get to a forest or the ocean.

  18. Very well I imagine, perhaps it would be the kick up the backside humanity is needing. Reconnecting us with our home, with nature.

Random fact - For those with insomnia head out to a real rural spot with no technology for 5/7 days and your body clock will completely reset. Mother Earth has absolutely everything we could possibly ever need.

  19. I work in IT... No more work!
