Storing Vermicompost

  1. I've got a 22 gallon tote full of nice fresh vermicompost. I'm not building my soil for another 2-3 weeks...will this compost be fine in a tote in my garage till then? It's got worms in it still that I'm drawing out with cantaloupe so I will get those all out..gonna start a flow thru just wondered if I need to do anything specific to this tote or just leave it...it in a 70-80 degree environment. Which I can bring inside if need be.

The EWC will be fine in the tote, in 70-80F temps, for the next 2-3 weeks.  You may want to turn it at some point, to keep it from going anaerobic, but it's probably not necessary.  And if it starts really drying out, add some water to keep it moist (not wet!).  If the tote is going to be sitting outside, presumably in the rain, you might want to put the lid on it and drill some holes in the bottom to ensure it's not getting soaked in there.

  3. Listen to Gandalf - anaerobic conditions are your enemy rendering your humus to mediocre quality at best.
