Testing The Waters With Cocoloco

  1. Whats up everybody?

It all started when I realized I was going to need a buddy to baby sit a plant for me (Amherst Sour Diesel). I wanted to make it easy on him so I decided to get a bag of Bushdoctor CocoLoco by Fox Farm. It is coco, EWC, and some other amendments. It actually seems great for germinating in. Here is the ingredients.

I was just going to use this while he babysat then pot up in standard coco and switch back to bottle nutes. But hey, why not give the organic side of things a try. Now that its into veg, Its looking a little light green, has very little node spacing, and branches are staying much more compact than I would like. If I was using bottle nutes I would up the grow nutes to give her some more nitrogen but with organics I don't really know what to do.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get this gal looking a bit more healthy? I have very little knowledge of organics so any input here would be awesome as I'm not sure what I should really be asking. Should I look into topdressing? Teas? Could it be a problem on the microbial level?

    Thanks for any input! Peace!

  2. I'm a bit confused.

What I look and strive for is compact growth and especially tight/close node spacing. You are looking for something more stretched out and gangly?

    Why?

    Wet

  3. Humus, get some real humus in there.

Whether compost or vermicompost or straight castings, don't settle for anything less than the highest quality available to you and topdress a good 2" and give it a nice watering.

Water it with an alfalfa/kelp or neem/kelp tea as a bonus.

    They will perk up.

  4.

I grow with a small LED so I have to LST the plant basically flat in order to get a good yield of mature buds. Figured I would try scroging this one since its supposed to be a lanky sativa dominant hybrid. There just isn't enough light penetration to reach the lower buds if it stays super compact. Anything below the canopy tends to be super fluffy popcorn.

Thanks for the info! Might have to do that one in phases until she is big enough to fit 2" of topdressing under her. Would there be any benefit to adding anything else to the topdressing besides humus?

  5. A pinch of kelp and neem for sure mixed into the topdress and a few pinches of rock dust (glacial, basalt) as that soil is certainly lacking in minerals (and quality humus) scatter some alfalfa pellets and mulch on top.

Personally I'd also toss down some clover seed under or in the compost top dress. ;)

  6. Right on man. Thanks for the tips!

Seems a bit expensive to buy these ingredients separate of one-another until I'm positive I want to kick the bottle nutes. Build A Soil offers a seemingly well priced product that is:

Neem Cake @ 1/2 Cup Per Cubic Foot
Kelp Meal @ 1/2 Cup Per Cubic Foot
Alfalfa Meal @ 1/4 Cup Per Cubic Foot
Crab Meal @ 1/2 Cup Per Cubic Foot
Fish Bone Meal @ 1/2 Cup Per Cubic Foot
    Mineral Mix @ 4 Cups Per Cubic Foot (Basalt x 2, Gypsum x 1, Oyster x 1)

They recommend mixing that into 1 ft^3 soil, but I could mix a few pinches of this with some vermicompost and use a topdress right?

  7. Sounds like a perfect start!

  8. Thanks again for the tips. I'll be ordering that mix and getting this soil tuned up a bit.
