Sativa And Indica, Knowing The Difference

Discussion in 'Marijuana Consumption Q&A' started by The Grasscity Post, Jul 22, 2014.

  1. The cannabis plant is split into two subspecies, cannabis indica and cannabis sativa. Here we examine the differences between the two.

Cannabis, a vastly medicinal and therapeutically unrivaled plant, is split into two subspecies, referred to as cannabis indica and cannabis sativa. Though these two species of cannabis retain strong similarities, they also have some considerably defined differences.

    The Difference in Effect

The difference between cannabis sativa and cannabis indica is most apparent when consuming the plant. Indica varieties are often stronger in terms of their ability to bring about a relaxed, more sedated type of high. This makes it perfect for those experiencing insomnia, or those wanting strong pain relief. Indica strains are typically preferred for nighttime use, given it can oftentimes lead to drowsiness.
Alternatively, sativa varieties commonly bring with them a more uplifting, cerebral type of high, which for some people can actually cause a burst of energy. Because of this, sativa strains are perfect for daytime use, and for those who simply don't want to become tired from their cannabis use.

    Plant Differences
One of the biggest difference between sativa and indica strains is the size and look of the actual plants. Sativas typically grow much taller, sometimes 10 to 20 feet, and have loosely branched, often narrow leaves. Indicas, on the other hand, are often short at around 3 feet tall, and have considerably wider leaves.
When it comes to flowering, indicas tend to flower much quicker, whereas sativas can sometimes take weeks longer. Although there are plenty of exceptions, indicas tend to produce a higher yield.

    Origins
Cannabis comes from the Canabaceae family of plants, which includes roughly 170 species, including hops. Although precise origins are unknown, scientists believe that sativa strains originated around the equator in countries such as Thailand and Mexico, while indica strains are said to have originated in higher altitude areas such as Nepal and Morocco.

    Choosing Between the Two
Whether it's an indica strain, a sativa strain, or a hybrid of the two, cannabis is an incredible plant with great medical value. However, knowing the differences between the plant's subspecies can make it easier to choose the type of cannabis that best fits you and your lifestyle.

  2. there's actually 3 subspecies...c.ruderalis

  3. Ruderalis isn't used for smoking though, its usually used for making non smoking related hemp products like clothes and hemp rope.

  4. just remember indica = indacouch

  5. Why does it seem like most street dealers have indicas over sativas?

  6. There are also those out there which classify c. afghanica separately from c. indica.

Over here in the Netherlands I'm told the most popular in the coffeeshops is a hybrid. I'm really clueless, but I always get the White Widow which is a hybrid. But it often seems to energize me, so I assume it has more Sativa than it has Indica.

    *Edit

    I was wrong:

  8. Oh, I like this post. Very, very helpful.

  9.
It's been smoked a lot in the last few years...autoflowering strains are ruderalis crosses...;)

Indicas are generally shorter in stature, have shorter flowering times, and are generally easier to grow than full blown sativas...hence, commercial growers tend to grow a lot more indicas...

  10. Cause they're all assholes. I've also noticed that. I want sativas, dude! We should write to Congress and complain about our dealers Roflmao. But for real.

  11. My thoughts exactly. I have never experienced a good sativa. Indicas are cool and all but I want to mix it up and have options. I even live in a medical state. But its behind the times here.
