You could have carved a carrot to make a bowl, make a hollow cone, place a hole in the top, and jam it into the joint. Or hold a chillum and the joint in your hand making an airtight tube to pass smoke between the two. I've done it before when i didn't have a slide. A well made chillum can act like a GOG slide if its made round and evenly enough.
