“When a government is dependent upon bankers for money, they and not the leaders of the government control the situation, since the hand that gives is above the hand that takes… Money has no motherland; financiers are without patriotism and without decency; their sole object is gain.”
    – Napoleon Bonaparte

This is one of my all time favorites.

"Political language... is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind" George Orwell

    And another favorite

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."

-- Hermann Goering at the Nuremberg Trials

  6. When I was younger I loved this Mark Twain quote: "Loyalty to my country ALWAYS. Loyalty to my government, only when it deserves it.”

It is a good way of separating "country" and "government," which most people today think is the same thing. However I am no longer loyal to "my government." Ever. Fuck all of them, all of the time.

"It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder." -- Albert Einstein

\n"Statism needs war; a free country does not. Statism survives by looting; a free country survives by producing." -- Ayn Rand

"Quotes are just nice-sounding rhetoric without context." - Samuel F. Spade

  11. "[Freedom is] not an endlessly expanding list of rights - the 'right' to education, the 'right' to health care, the 'right' to food and housing. That's not freedom, that's dependency. Those aren't rights, those are the rations of slavery - hay and a barn for human cattle."  -- P.J. O'Rourke (during the "HillaryCare" debates)

"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary." -- H. L. Mencken

"Sir, there have existed, in every age and in every country, two distinct orders of men -- the lovers of freedom and the devoted advocates of power." -- Senator Robert Y. Hayne, 1830

These two aren't really political, but thought-provoking anyway:

It is formed, irradiated, disseminated; it is instrumental, it is persuasive; it has status, it establishes canons of taste and value; it is virtually indistinguishable from certain ideas it dignifies as true, and from traditions, perceptions, and judgments it forms, transmits, reproduces.

    Edward Said
