Air Pump Vs Water Pump In Dwc

Discussion in 'Hydroponic Growing' started by lumps_deli, Jul 20, 2014.

  1. Does anyone use a water pump in their 5 gallon DWC system? I have been reading online and see a lot of material that say water pumps may be more efficient than air pumps with air stones. If anybody has any experience with this would you mind sharing?

  2. Water pumps move water. Air pumps infuse the water with air. They have completely different jobs and one can't do the job of the other one at any reasonable efficiency. They aren't comparable

Water pumps can be useful if you were to attach PVC pipe with microspray misters for an AERO hydro effect.  But you can't just use the water pump itself in a 5 gallon bucket DWC setup.

In addition to what the others said..

A water pump utilizes a motor. The heat that motor generates dissipates into the reservoir. That heat will slowly raise the temperature of your nutrient solution. This is a bad thing.

The heavier duty air pumps sometimes have a nozzle that you can hook a hose up to. I've got a hose pulling colder air from outside my tent to aerate my nutes solution.

A warm ass res is never a good thing

  5. I just added an additional 40-60 gallon air pump.

  6. Hey Bra take a look at my avatar. you can see my pump sitting in the roots. the bucket hold six gallons i use five. I am experiementing with this little item Dewey Mister this little thing uses air to move your water looks some good yeah! the pump adds heat to the res. only thing i dont like about this little system

  7. It's my first time, so with all the great input from you guys and a little(maybe a lot) of trial and error, my next grow should be fantastic!

  8. I'm waiting on my flowering plant to finish. She's got a 70lpm pump all to herself in a 5 gallon bucket.

Once she's done I'm thinking about adding it to my 25 gallon tote I'm using for veg. I'll go from 70 to 140lpm in that res.

    Its going to be awesome.

  9. Make sure to use black hose instead of the clear for your airstones you would be suprised on the light that can be carried into your res through them.

  10. I am using clear tubing, I check my res everyday when I switch out my iced water bottles. I also clean out the bucket very week when I switch out the water/nutes. I do cover up all 3 of the tubes at the top with foil tape, and thus far no algae.

  11. this is a great thing to add for your bene bugs. Microbe life photosynthesis plus it has the Glomus you need and it contains Bacillus subtilis so it is a great foliar to use also. I think an innoculant is a must. come over and see my grow Bra. i am using the dwc sys  http://forum.grasscity.com/hydroponic-grow-journals/1319554-xml-350-hydro-grow.html

  12. Eh.. I don't really see a need for black tubing for air lines.

If I were to be using tubes for a recirculating system i would make sure the tubes carrying water and nutrients were black.

  13. ^^^ I agree, clear air lines aren't going to allow enough light in to allow algae to grow and that's the only issue that comes with light in the res. I have 2x 1" holes in my res lid with 8 airlines running through and my NS is always sparkling clean. I have never had algae in there
