Not sure how many of you saw this yet.

They just got their website up

I was expecting this to be only in title but it looks like the King is shooting for an African Switzerland. Interestingly enough this might be the world's first technocracy

What science and agriculture there is to be done in North Africa? I dunno. His main goal is to develop a sustainable and self sufficient (food and energy wise, at least) nation in the desert, This will provide useful information for other farms, especially in areas being hit by drought. I hope this ends up being more than a couple research shakes in the wilderness. A monarchic technocracy is practically my dream system.

  2. They're looking for donations... Go for it.

  3. You don't see any potential problems with such a system?

If its only a monarchy by name, no. It's more of a 'dream system' in that I would expect it to come out of a science fiction novel or one that I would write myself. I do think a technocracy itself has potential.

  5. Best of luck to them.

  6. so would the role of "monarch" be filled by a computer?

You mean fantasy wise? I'd opt for something space operaish, a high royal 'benevolent dictator' with a system with the best of scholars, engineers, doctors, etc. running their specific fields and working politics around scientific method. Maybe something like LoGH mixed with the federation from Star Trek.

If you want something with the computer idea read Asimov's The Last Question

  9. Their field would have to be teaching and operating the business of those in "their field".  You can't just take a profound physicist and expect them to be good at running the field.  We have specialization of labor for a reason.

Anyway, the guy is missing one thing.  He says that this is how it was done in the past, which is correct, some group comes to some land puts a flag in it and claims it as their own.  The only thing he is missing is the coercive army that will wipe out any indigenous people or people who otherwise dispute the claim.  I can guarantee if he finds or starts anything of value in that region, there will be disputes.
