So I need a new car badly, I have 2 choices currently.

One is a BMW with 130k its a 1998 328I and its the one I want the most. Things in excellent condition and seems to be built like a tank.

The other is a 2001 VW Jetta. Its cheaper and has less miles.(106 k) Everyones telling me to go with the jetta because the "BMW wil get expensive when stuff starts to break"

I will be basically broke after I buy either of these and need the car to last for 3+ years atleast. It seems like the VW is the smarter choice, but DAMN I WANT THAT BIMMER!

vw for sure. that bmw is a shitty 3 series, over 15 years old, is just going to cause you heartache and misery, plus its over $1k more expensive. surely there is something better for that price though.

  3. German love eh. I think either would be acceptable. Personally I would get the BMW. Have you looked at Hondas? Parts are cheap, easy to fix, and run forever. Maybe a toyota corolla or something?

  5. A modified BMW E30 M3.

  6. if those options jetta

  7. Both of those cars won't be cheap to fix. But at least the Jetta doesn't have as many miles. The BMW will most likely give you a lot of costs in repairs.

  8. Both of those won't be cheap fixes. If I had the option, I would say BMW because I trust them to be more reliable, maybe that is the bias I have living in Bavaria. Main concern I would have with the VW is all of the electrical issues they had with that year.

  9. you forgot the option of saving money for an Alfa Romeo 4C.

    pretty much a $60,000 Ferrari.

but i would go for the Jetta. cheaper to run on a weekly/monthly basis. think fuel costs, tires, oil changes... the little things.

shitty three series? of all the e36's, that 328i is the one to buy. it also looks very clean for the age but seems to be priced a little high considering its an automatic.. and the engine was engine of the year for at least two years, if i remember correctly. on the difference in mileage on these two very different cars - 20k miles is negligible.

not on a $4000 budget lol, that won't even buy a rusted out rolling shell these days.

*facepalm* i said shitty 3 series not shitty 328i. might as well go buy a volvo or a saab...

  12.
    Volvo and Saab are fwd.

  13. As other users have stated, both cars could end up expensive. Hell, my subaru legacy 05 just had to have two bearings replaced, and that sucked. You should get a japanese econo car if you wana save dough.

actually, i believe you said "that shitty 3 series" which implies you were speaking about that particular automobile. either way, it was appropriate you threw a "facepalm" in there, because you either had your foot in your mouth or are just plain ignorant. the only real downside to bmw ownership is that if a person lacks the ability to do simple maintenance on their own, it will cost them at the dealership. i've owned a civic, and three bmws. guess which i've had the best luck with, despite the fact that all bmws had higher mileage than the civic. i can also say that parts for bmws are really not more expensive than parts for civics. and in actuality, may be cheaper to service in terms of labor.

the worst part about the e36 chassis? the interior.

  15. and just throwing this out there, but car ownership is generally expensive.

BMW is over priced for what you get. Volkswagen is the better choice out of the two and it will last longer and is a better investment in the long run (repairs, reliability, and gas mileage). Personally if you are geared torward German engineering I would recommend and Audi! Very reliable, looks great and not as expensive as a BMW. I have a 2006 Audi A4 2.0 Turbo and I love it. I originally wanted a 3 series just like you until I did the research. Good luck!

PS: Audi's all wheel drive system.... Enough said.

  17. @[member="Waxy_Pax"] Audi's are VW, also probably not in the price range. Also parts will be more or less the same with BMW, Audi or VW.

  18. Where and how far do you drive everyday?

I would go for an Amish car, a lot cheaper on the long run.
