I have used just about every organic method on the market and still have problems every year in the vege garden! I have a bottle of Pyrenone crop spray that I haven't tried yet. Online the mixing rate is 1 to 2 TSP per gallon of water. It also states that it works better when mixed with other insecticides. What other sprays can I mix with it and at what rate??? If you miss one leaf they will continue to spread!! If I had a minature Tractor orchard sprayer with a trained mouse to drive it then I could get 100% coverage!! My buddy has zero problems but he uses a systemic which isn't organic, I am about to the point of using his product but I thought someone here could bail me out of this mess. Any advice would be appreciated.
Have you tried using nematodes or introducing other beneficial insects to the garden such as praying mantis or ladybug?
Been there done that!! 40 feet by 80 feet of garden space.Lady bugs work but they don't stay after they eat! They and all the other organic methods get to fu-king expensive!!I am to old ta be crawling around and spraying under every leaf. Just looking for a easy way out! The systemic is called pravado and it works! He puts 1/2 TSP per gallon of water and injects it into the soil around his plants. You can't pick or eat anything for 30 days thereafter! He has a large farm and an account at a chemical supplier, You and I can't get this product at your local Ace hardware!
It may be too late at this point, but planting sunflowers around your garden can help w/ aphids. Ants will move them to the sunflower leaves and farm them there, instead of all over your veggies. I've seen aphids on my sunflowers this year(accompanied by ants), but not on my veggies, which is good b/c I have enough to deal w/ already w/ all the other garden pests.
those fucking ants man *shakes fist* every year. cheeky buggers you can make a chilli garlic spray. something like this (i just googled as an example) \tOrganic pesticide: Garlic Chilli spray8-10 chillies finely sliced 4 cloves garlic crushed and cut roughly 1 Tablespoon soap flakes 1 Litre boiling water Combine in a glass jar and set aside for 24 hours. Strain and pour into a spray bottle. Use within 2 weeks
Steve I have a huge patch of sunflowers blocking the weed from eyeballs!! The only thing they have brought is bees , humingbirds and lots of green lacewings. I got a bit of advice from another website. 1 cup mineral or canola oil with 2 teaspoons of dawn dish soap per gallon of water. Very cost effective and it works!!! I added the pyronone to it just for shits and giggles. Thanks for all your help
I use sunflowers as a privacy fence also. Aphids are a big reason I'm doing nothing but hydro inside the house. OOOhhhh I hate those fuckers.
So far so good! I have 4 rows planted and I used the 10 ft to 6 ft varieties .They grew taller than stated on the seed pack due to the rich soil but the flower heads are heavy and they break down the stalk. It provides a very dense canopy. Next year I am going to use wild sunflower seeds that I plucked off the side of the road. They get real big in good soil and the flower heads are not so heavy .The wife loves all the color and the humming birds. I also planted morning glory to climb up the sunflower stalks. I had to tie them up in order to hold them from the wind bending them over but for the most part they are holding up very good.
Haha, great! I was talking about your aphid solution though My mammoth sunflowers are definitely bowing their heads, too; giant suckers, they are.
catch some of those green lacewings and put them where the aphids are.. those things demolish aphids and i suggest neem oil, theres ready to spray products you can buy that come in a spray bottle so you don't have to worry about the mixing if you don't want to i had minor aphid problems this year mostly on my apple tree but found a few phids on my girls as well i bought some ladybugs and a good amount of em stuck around so i have no problems at this point, always subject to change though
You can actually use soap and water mix. Use about 10 drops of dish soap to about every 20oz of water. Spray the bottom of the leaves and where ever else you can see the aphids. Leave it on for about 10 mins and use jet water to wash the plants off. The soapy water actually drowns the aphids. Then go back to step one, and repeat, every other day and you should see them start to dissipate over the next couple weeks. But keep in mind you will never get rid of every aphid. Good luck!
