Seasoning With Out Bho?

Discussion in 'Concentrate Tools' started by YoShytsWeak, Jun 27, 2014.

  1. Has anyone successfully seasoned a nail with something besides bho?

I was wondering it it would be possible to do with olive oil

  4. Yeah I believe it was quave or some other glassblower who works quartz that recommends it lol it really does work though, I did it with my first quartz nails

  5. And it works on TI too? Don't see why it wouldn't lol is this only with the oven method or can I do it with the torch?

On a second note, I wonder what a grape jelly dab would taste like lol. Not going to find out though, that's for sure lol

  6. I've honestly never tried it on Ti but give it a shot on the small cup or whichever one you wont use as often just in case it turns out weird :p

also, make sure to do it low temp, like lower than if you were gonna dab. you only want it to slowly boil on the surface of the nail and then scrape/torch off the rest and repeat a couple times.

also, yeah dont try that, smoking sugar is intensely bad for you

  7. Haha yeah I would never try that lol.

I think I've mastered the art of seasoning with a torch. Only took me like .06 to season it properly. Supper tasty dabs after that. Just 2 .03's supper low temp boiling on the nail was all it took! Deff gonna have to try it with the jelly on the small head and see what happens!

Now I'm excited. Do you know if grape jelly is the only one or is strawberry jelly good too?

What do you mean by what do I mean?

Seasoning metal means causing oil to be absorbed into the surface by using heat. This seals and protects the metal surface, and provides a non-stick coating.

Usually it's done with cast iron cookware, but it's the same with metal nails. With cookware, if you don't season it, your food will stick and burn, and you will get a metallic taste. Similar would happen while dabbing with an unseasoned nail.

I've never seasoned a nail, but I'm assuming the same principle applies. With cookware I use Crisco, corn oil, lard or bacon fat. It has to be an oil that can stand being heated for a long time without burning away. Olive oil is too delicate and will burn off quickly.

Once an item is seasoned, it shouldn't be washed with soap or chemicals, as this will strip the seasoned coating and the item will need to be seasoned again.

  12. Yeah that's correct!

I've always thought of seasoning with other oils but didn't want to cross contaminate my nail. That's the real issue.

For a proper season you want to put your oil on the nail at just below the oils leidenfrost point. If it's above the leidenfrost point it will not touch the surface of the nail. What happens is the nail is so hot that when the oil gets close, but not touching, to the surface of the nail, the bottom layer of the oil will turn to vapor and create a small layer between the surface of the nail and the un-vaporized oil insulating it from the heat. The end result is the oil doesn't boil into the pores of the metal effectively to create a sort of shield between the surface of the nail and your future dabs.

By putting the oils on there below the leidenfrost effect you can effectively fill the pores of the metals surface.

Part of the reason TI is so expensive is because of it's resistance to corrosion which works against us trying to season the nail.

Interesting information. I've always seasoned cast iron in the oven at about 350 F for an hour or so. I usually use Crisco shortening because it sticks to whatever it's coated with, and then slowly melts and penetrates the metal. I wonder if this would work for a nail: use a shallow Pyrex or other non-metal bakeware, coat the nail in a blob of Crisco and put it in the oven. I doubt it would need an hour... maybe half an hour. The other tip is to avoid using any soap or chemical cleansers on the nail after seasoning. They strip the coating and you'll have to do it again.

  15. Something about using a fat to season a nail seems bad to me, but if jelly works.. Well then I don't see why not lol :) the thing is you got a duality so you can't replace the head on that. Maybe wait until you have a nail with replaceable parts parts.

I'm going to season the smaller cup with a glop of jelly since it hasn't yet been tried on TI. Or at least not to my knowledge. I'll report back on that to see how it goes. Usually just use them as a heat sync anyways
