Us Holds Patent For Medical Marijuana.

  1. On the one hand, United States federal government officials have consistently denied that marijuana has any medical benefits. On the other, the government actually holds patents for the medical use of the plant.

Just check out US Patent 6630507 titled “Cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants” which is assigned to The United States of America, as represented by the Department of Health and Human Services.
    The patent claims that -

Does this mean even if they legalize they will be able to stop us from growing our own medical marijuana if they wanted?

  2. to be fair, they said it had no benefit before later patenting it. though once patented, should it not have been re listed as safe for medical. to many chiefs controlling it all and not enough Indians

  3. Not quite. The patent is for an application or method of using cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants. Cannabinoids can be organically derived from cannabis, or synthesized without using the cannabis plant. The researchers who discovered the potential for cannabinoids to act as antioxidants and neuroprotectants applied for this patent. This by itself does not lead to an actual drug.

Kannalife received the exclusive rights to create a drug based on this patent in 2011. The resulting drug will undoubtedly NOT be whole plant cannabis, so even then there would be no "patent" on the use of plant, just a patent on making that particular drug from the plant.

For historical perspective, Marinol, Dronabinol, etc... are all medicines based on cannabinoids (THC even!) and are currently in Schedule III. None of these medicines represent a "patent" on the plant. Even if/when the DEA reschedules organically derived THC (from cannabis plants) in Schedule III as generic for Marinol, there still won't be a "patent on the plant".

    It's a bit complicated...  :)

  4. I appreciate the detail you put into that answer thank you.

  5. Marijuana has been used by people around the world for thousand of years. Though still in dispute, medical marijuana has been found to have positive effects with cancer patients as far as controlling nausea and increasing appetite with notable long term effect.

  6. in other words. cannabis is being used to offset the effects of man made medicine when someone is suffering from cancer and using man made meds. good god, why is it not the first defense so the person does not have to suffer the effects of man made meds ?

  7. Gov does whatever the fuck it wants and always always has doi. Never trust em
