Good Albums To Listen To Beginning To End?

Discussion in 'Music genres, Bands and Artists' started by SMOCATRON, Jun 9, 2014.

  1. Can anyone recommend awesome albums to listen to beginning to end while smoking alone?

    On my list so far:
    - Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd - Cliched? Maybe. Overrated? Hell no.
    - Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd - Those four magic notes in Shine On...
    - Animals by Pink Floyd - A very underrated gem. The airy, spacy solos in Dogs really enhances the high
    - Paranoid by Black Sabbath - Fuck yeah, Ozzy.
    - Maggot Brain by Funkadelic - Nothing like a bit of groove
    - Axis: Bold as Love by Jimi Hendrix - True 60's psychedlic shit
    - Physical Graffiti by Led Zeppelin - I think this album was made for smoking lol
    - Legalize It by Peter Tosh - Title says it all lol
    - Weightless by Animals As Leaders - Next level alien shit, makes you go out of your mind
    - Pungent Effulgent by Ozric Tentacles - Spacey/dreamy goodness
    - Rubber Soul by The Beatles - Definitely cliched, but essential
    - Hot Dub by Sly & Robbie - Nothing like a bit of rub-a-dub dub for a slow-burning blunt on a sunny day

Anything to add? Nothing gangster rap or techno please.

Oh man, I forgot about that album.

    Sackcloth and Ashes- 16 Horsepower

    oh yeah the first one!

  10. Goats Head Soup-Rolling Stones. The last of the Golden Years records with lead guitarist Mick Taylor (Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile On Main Street). Exile is the most critically acclaimed, and by far the most druggie album of all time (listen to the lyrics from the first song, Rocks Off) Sticky Fingers has the most famous songs, but Goats Head Soup has the most incredible aura. Like the last 45 minutes of someone's life, experiencing the album is like trying desperately to hang on to every beautiful moment knowing that as soon as the intensity stops, your heart beat will follow.

Album highlight: Coming Down Again. Keith Richards heartbreaking vocal and lyrical work tells his story at its most human, stealing his then wife from ex partner and Rolling Stones founder Brian Jones and watching the demise that it caused, all the while struggling with his own drug problems

London Calling-The Clash. It was released in 1979, and Rolling Stone magazine calls it the best album of the 80's. Doesn't that say it all? Like the band it self, the music is eclectic and magical. Every song is like a different genre, played by musicians at the top of their field. Half way through the album I recommend pinching your self as a reminder that 2 years prior these guys had been street wise gutter punks only capable of 2 minute bursts of energy and aggression.

Album highlight: Two. One, Guns Of Brixton, the first and only good vocal excursion by bassist Paul Simonon. Bass heavy, reggae influenced, with undeniably punk lyrics, it is the most mind blowing song on the entire album. Two, Death Or Glory: A song about irony and hypocrisy. Fakers milking money from fans claiming that they'll die before they're sold, defilers of of nuns and clergy women later join the church. Great song

GnR Lies-Guns N Roses-Though not my favourite Guns N Roses album (I don't think I have one. The three good albums they had [Appetite For Destruction and the Use Your Illusion records] are too magical and unique to choose from), it is perfectly split down the middle for you to choose what kind of music you want to listen you. The first side was recorded in 1986 and was Guns first release under the name Live Like a Suicide, simply the band playing in studio, un mixed, and added to a live track. Raunchy, raw, and fun. The second half, recorded in 1988, is 4 acoustic songs, including the hit "Patience", one of the most beautiful acoustic love songs ever written. The song "One in a Million" was extremely controversial when released. Written about the point of view of the average mid western American, the song contains lines like "Police and niggers, get out of my way. No need to buy none of your, gold chains today" and most infamously, "Immigrants and faggots, they make no sense to me. They come to our country, and think they'll do as they please. Like start some mini Iran, or spread some fucking disease [side note, the previous line got the band kicked off of an AIDS fundraiser that they were going to play for]"

Album highlight: Used To Love Her. Who doesn't love a song about killing a nagging girlfriend?

There are tons and tons more, but the above records are timeless, and suitable to anyone, regardless of musical taste. Simply put, every song on the records is so unlike the one preceding it that each song is like its own album. Its own universe.

    Enjoy

  16. It's a little different style than what you mentioned but it's my favorite album, especially when considered as a cohesive work.  The music is amazing, unique and the songs tell a story through the album.
