Venting To Attic

Discussion in 'Growing Marijuana Indoors' started by Blitzkriegin, Jun 8, 2014.

  1. Is it actually bad for an attic to vent a small grow tent into an attic using a carbon filter?

A small one will probably be fine. High humidity can cause problems in attics and you may get a small heat signature coming out of the vents so it depends on where you live and how big the grow is, but for most I think it would be fine. Heat from a small grow would likely be completely buffered by the time it exits the attic I would have thought

I vent my exhaust back out into my loft, like said it depends on your setup, getting clean air in is the main thing your need to battle hot temps this time of year though

Do you think it would be safe to run the fan and carbon filter in the attic? The attic is prob 90-100 this time of year... I'm just thinking about the fan short circuiting in the hot attic

Oh yeah, and the grow will be really small, prob 2-4 plants, not using hot lighting, cfl or led

Its difficult man this time of year is the honest answer, I have LEDs, its still a little too hot on days, ive just invested in a little air con unit. As far as the fans short circuiting, that won't happen if you have things wired up correctly and safely.

How air you planning on brining cooler air into the loft?

Yeah it will be safe, heat won't cause a short circuit. Am I right in saying your grow isn't in the attic? If you are running low heat output lights is it worth cutting a hole in your ceiling to run the exhaust? I may have misunderstood your set up though. Carbon filters are designed to have air sucked through and not blown through. Both ways work but there is a dust filter on the outside that should be washed every now and then. This dust filter will prolong the life of your filter. If the air blows through the carbon will coat in dust and become less efficient in a shorter time

  8. My plan was to put a tent in a closet and put the fan/filter in the attic, pulling air from the room through the tent and exhausting in the attic.. So a fan running in 100+ degrees won't be a fire hazard?

My other option is putting it in a shed in the back, but I'd have to run electricity and not quite sure how to do it, although I think my breaker has an extra opening

You're right, the grow isn't in the attic, it would be in a closet with access to the attic so I would just be cutting a hole in the door that can be replaced no problem. And I just want to put it in the attic to make it less noisy, and also make it pull air from the room the closet is in.. I don't have intake, except for air in the room

  10. You will need an intake, even if it's just a hole, but air needs to enter the closet or the fan isn't going to be able take any out.

If the fan overheated it should cut out, all decent fans have this safety measure in place. My systemair fans are practically mechanical silent. The noise you can hear comes from turbulent air going through the duct. Having a carbon filter on the front of the fan quietens things down a lot
