So I just wanted to start a little topic about my grow. I've never really grown a thing in my life and I'm looking for feedback and advice. Things like, what kind of soil to use on a low budget, what kind of ferts to use, plant in ground or in pots or even in pots in the ground. I live in an area with thick red clay so digging up holes is going to be a lot of hard work if I go that route.

Anyways, I started about two weeks ago and this is my progress:

I had a little problem with little itty bitty black bugs eating my leaves so I sprayed a neem oil and water mixture on them. One plant has weird long and narrow leaves and I'm not sure why, any thoughts?

also on my first grow, so no professional here. although i would recommend adding some dirt around the base of the blunts they are stretching and bound to snap if they keep getting taller.
the girls in the last two pics look pretty good

@[member="Bav"] girls? how can you tell this early or are you just saying that as good luck?

Thanks for the tip about adding more soil I will do that tomorrow, they have surprisingly been through two rough thunder storms here lately without being bothered.

  4. He was meaning good luck ;)
Other than those tiny bug holes, your plant look ok!

But i would surely advice you to move them to a bigger pot!

    Thats the first step...

    Did the neem oil work?

@[member="GrizzlyCroatia"] The neem oil worked great. Not one single bug on or even near my plants. @[member="Bav"] No confusion just clarification :p

Okay, now that you guys are telling me I should transplant I need advice on how I should transplant them. I have a very small budget probably not much more than $100. I need to know if I should get soil (I have no clue which kind) and put them in the ground or put them in pots. Based on budget I was thinking I should go into the ground because pots would just eat away my budget. The issue with that though is the hard red clay I mentioned earlier.

Any advice on soil would be quite helpful, same with fertilizers.

  7. You have special threads just about soil,go check it out...
Im using a normal organic soil with some accesories...
Just use a normal soil mixed with with perlite or somethin like that (it aerates the soil and the roots can "breathe")...
Your budget is enough for top quality things,i bought 30l of soil and 8 pots for about 5$ lol...
It will be enough for everything u need...

  8. I'm currently using fox farms ocean forest and everything is going great. not really to cheap though. i wouldn't transplant into ground unless the soil has been well prepped. you will most likely never have good luck with just digging a whole and dropping them in.

  9. What kind of store? I see bags of soil for that $5. I would also like to know what size pots should be used for these outdoor plants. Also how much soil it will take to fill these pots.

  10. I was able to revive my plants. I also pinched the dead/or dying leaves to they could focus on growing taller and more healthier leaves.

P.S. I'm sorry for not taking pictures but I'm always in rush. Hope to get some tomorrow.

Mix your own soil from peat moss, perlite, etc. if you can't afford to buy a pre-made soil like pro-mix or sunshine mix.

  12. What is pro-mix or sunshine mix?

  13.
I use PRO MIX HP and they have it at the Home Depot near me. It's a pre mixed soil so you don't have to worry about adding anything until you introduce your nutrient system. It has perlite and Myco already mixed (this blog does a good job of explaining what myco is - http://forum.grasscity.com/blog/9813/entry-12713-mycorrhizae-101/)

If you end up using pro mix the training center on their site has a lot of videos and articles on how they recommend using it.

Definitely look around here for discussions on soil. When I first got started growing I remember thinking "what's so special about soil?" but there's a lot to be learned and what you use makes a huge difference in your grow. Good luck!

  14. That's why I'm so worried about what soil I use. I understand using the right soil can make or break your grow. I'm worried about pot size too 3 or 5 gallon I'm totally unsure.

$100 should be more then enough to get you started.

Your total soil cost should be less then $50, and since your growing outdoors you wont have to worry about buying lights.

My soil mixture is Fox farms organic soil/compost/potting soil/chicken manure (60/25/10/5%) Everyone has their own recipe, just look around at what others are doing and come up with one that works for you.

It may be a pain in the ass, but if you do decide to plant them in the ground you'll need to dig a decent hole for each plant, the minimum you'll want is 1 1/2 feet wide by 2 feet deep  Bury the plants up to their first set of leaves, that'll help stabilize them.

Also, depending on where your planting them, you might want to look into getting some chicken wire to keep the deer from snacking on them until they get bigger. You'll also want some slug bait as well...

If you want to use pots, a cheap(er) option is to use 5 gallon buckets. Check Craigslist, I can get all I want for $2 each. You'll need to drill a bunch of drain holes (1/4 inch) in the bottom but that's easy, I'd also recommend putting a small layer of rock on the bottom to help it drain better.

And don't forget to put them where they'll get as much direct sunlight as possible....

  16. Thanks for the help, those are all great ideas.

Don't know if you can see but there is white powder looking stuff on top of some of the soil.

I pinched some leaves off that were dying because of too much neem oil. Hope to learn how to LST and Fimm so I can get the most out of my plants.

Still trying to figure out soil and pot size. Is five gallon big enough?

5 gallons are good to use yes. Basically each gallon is a foot of plant height.

  20. Thank, btw subbed to your thread! What kind of soil are you using?
