My Just Add Water Organic Soil Mix ( The One To Watch )

  1. Ok I'm moving into organic growing and this is my first attempt at constructing and maintaining a soil.

    I have two parts:

First is a container that is composting to produce material to turn into tea for later use.

The second part, and the main portion of this post is my "organic" soil mix

     Soil Mix

               2 coco coir bricks
               1 bag of top soil
               1 bag earth worm castings
1 bag random assortment of old soil( fox farm, and other "high end" soils that have the         micronutrients needed, i.e. minerals)

              Yielded:
Approx 20-25 gal soil mix (total estimated volume)

    Amendments
1 tsp per gallon (lower ended to 20 tsp per amendment)

                Bone meal
                Kelp meal fertilizer
                High nitrogen bat guano
                Jobes tomato fertilizer

Some old “microbe brew” from fox farm days

Will let to cook for a few days before using to start seedlings. As the plants get into flowering I plan to add extra phosphorus if needed, assumed the ACT is not sufficient.

Ok so I said just add water, but the tea is so easy to make if you have to compost anyways for organics.

Thoughts? Also planning on some bitching to-maters as well.

  2. I have only a single season under my belt.. But I'm not sure "a few days" will be enough time for your amendment mix to break down. To me, it seems like you are risking burning the seedlings. Considering that seedlings need no nourishment the first few weeks, why have them in a "hot" soil where you risk burning them up? Maybe start them in a starter mix of just peat,Ewc, and aeration(perlite). Just my thoughts. But I've been wrong plenty before. Maybe someone can elaborate and give you a professional and experienced opinion.

  3. I highly advise those that  have not to read this site here and gain a basic understanding of sequestered nutrition and how our soil works, in regards to nutrition and pH.

Personally I start seedlings in a 90% sphagnum peat moss and 10% vermicompost media. Works well for seedlings and cuttings.

You'll see some issues if you try planting in that soil right away after mixing...your best bet is to wait a minimum of 2 weeks, with 4 being the ideal time to let it cycle imo.

ACT's are not about nutrition...kind of amazes me how many people view it as such. I suggest reading this site here for more information.

  4. Im fully aware of the purpose of an ACT and how it works. It works by two means.

    1. Assuming a 2-3 day or longer "steep" or aeration time will allow several different genera and phyla of microbes to occur. They each take in nutrients and expel waste that is used by the next "set" to come along. The next "set" comes along because the nutrients change and allow their growth. This is the same thing that happens in composting, different classes of microbes work on different by products to make different by products etc. So the point in this part is that there all sorts of micro/macro nutrients as well as simple organic compounds for the second part.

    2. The tea provides a renourishment or as I see it, and more accurate, is a re-inocculation of the soil, allowing the already present flora and fauna new nutrient sources as well as filling any gaps in the nutrient cycling process.

And no this is not a full soil composition, it will be mix in with uncomposted materials, especially early on.

  5. Haven't started my cannabis but the tomatoes are going great

still trying to sound proof my grow room before i get ahead of myself
