Boy With Autism Thrives After Using Special Medical Cannabis

  1. Five years ago, doctors told Mieko Hester-Perez to plan the funeral of her 9-year-old son, who had been diagnosed with autism at 16 months, and later with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Instead, Hester-Perez turned to medical marijuana to try and save his life.

Now, her son Joey is doing surprisingly well. Once he began using the strain of medical marijuana that was concocted specifically for him - called “Joey's Strain” - the boy began making vast improvements, gaining weight, calming down, and smiling more. Hester-Perez noted that Joey was no longer “on edge” after consuming a marijuana brownie once a week.

Before trying marijuana, Joey had been taking 13 different drugs every day, and his symptoms only worsened when he got older. But Hester-Perez couldn't bear the thought of losing him. “I couldn't imagine my life without Joey,” she said.

The family first had to try out 14 to 15 different strains of marijuana before finding the right fit. Instead of smoking it, most kids who take medical marijuana consume it as food, such as brownies. The brownies that Joey consumes contain cannabis oil created at the Buds and Roses Collective in Studio City, which has just begun to see an increase in parents who are searching for cannabis cures for their children. “So they just can take a grain of rice-sized oil on their finger, put it under the tongue, and it's very effective,” Aaron Justis, president of Buds and Roses Collective, told ABC 7. “That's the most concentrated, purest way.”

Research into understanding cannabis' effects on autism has just begun, and much more will be required before any conclusions can be made about marijuana's potential therapeutic effects on autistic children. However, Joey's Strain is a sign that cannabis can be honed to treat specific individuals. “This is one of the most therapeutically active substances known to man,” Kyle Kushman, a cultivator of medical marijuana who designed “Joey's Strain,” told ABC-7. “Winemakers spend their whole lives trying to create one new variety of wine they can be proud of. Cannabis is so special that every seed that comes off of a cannabis plant is unique and has a slightly different cannabinoid profile.”
“It's very satisfying and now we're getting more and more parents to work with,” Justis told ABC-7. “People are getting it. The science is behind it. It feels really good.”

damn this is awesome!  get it right down to the last strain for the kid to thrive! science and natural plant based medicine working together to FIND the correct outcome for health and healing.

oh, that dude was enlightening abc-7 ha ha. give it to em bro

  5. This is the kind of shit that needs to be known! If only some people knew the positive effects....

  6. More and more neurological disorders being effectively treated with cannabis are going to surface in the news in the coming months as many many pro pot studies have been predicting for as long as decades ago.

Despite the awesome news of this success story its still too fucking tragic that its the year 2014 and only NOW are we seeing some kind of mainstream effort to get this miracle medicine properly synthesized into something that can be used with for for-sure and scientifically backed results, wish this could have been discovered unto the people well before autism become a freaking epidemic in this country.

  7. Look at the compatetion. Big pharma. Would they rather you take 13 pills a day or few drops of cbd oil under the tongue.
The medical industrie is like any other one. They are there to make money and not save people. Cured people mean loss of money. Why would they want that.

  8. Yes but there is also a need for specifics such as dosages and the right combination of cbd, thc, etc...While I agree pharma is positioning themselves to takeover the mmj market, there is a need for those who shouldnt take cannabis without specific knowledge of what they are taking and certainly most dispensaries/providers do not provide this knowledge. That is why I feel there is potentially a lot of good to come out of this, not just your point of view of looking at everything as a government takeover.

  9. therein lies the issue. were we to know what we need to do what with then there would be no need for anyone else to show us ( charge$$$ ) what we need to do what with., that science is ever expanding and mans' own connection with our health and what is around us to help keep our health and at what dosages to maintain said health is the conundrum. I look at it like this, if a big green alien popped up out of nowhere and gave us a pill and said here this will fix anything would we accept it. we hardly know shit about shit so we will accept anything not knowing what the hell it is which is what we do every time we go to the doctor....

many many people who find miracle results from marijuana like the kid in the article have to go through an eplethora of strains before they find something they can make into an edible or an oil to be properly used for there condition, what if some of these people dont have the ability to wait for 15+ strains of trial an error to get relief?

As it currently stands, a website like this one has more to offer on the guidlines of cannabis's medicinal value then any government official health resource out there and just so you can try to make a medicine by yourself to continue the trial and error process, when there is that kind of lacking of offial guidlines and forcing of people to make their own medicine then something absolutely has to be done, a little government overreach wont fucking kill you for the sake of being able to know which strain in what form will be best for you instead of going through a whole regiment of strains to find something that works under no professional supervision to make sure your giving proper doeses or for the potential to properly respond to some kind of possible negative reaction instead of being left in the dark to fend for ourselves while also being labled criminals.

  11. This was one awesome story to read.

  12. so many kids that died from their diseases couldve lived or enjoyed the time better by just taking some fucking oil. ignorant parents

  13. Almost 80 years of ignorance & a lack of public research, but at least the U.S is finally starting to change their minds about the benefits of Cannabis. It's about damn time!
    Keep legalizing!
