First Coco, Mystery Seed In Bushdoctor (Foxfarm) Coco Loco

Discussion in 'Coco Coir' started by NtothePtotheK, May 19, 2014.

  1. Sometimes even in headdies I find a seed.  Well I saved a couple and recently found them!  They must have been from good bud, so I've tried to germinate them.  One jumped right out of it's seed and grew to 1.5" in the paper towel, with little yellow coty... co.. (the first leaves) ;)

Well I ran entirely out of pro-mix so during a trip to the garden center (and having read lots of good things about coco) made a spontaneous decision to get some fox farm coco loco on sale.  I put an inch or two of expanded clay pellets under the coco.

I have a feeling this is going to be a piece of cake.   :)

I hope it's not a male or hermie.

There is it, right in the center.

  3. What is coco loco? Is that just coco with premixed perlite or is there more to the story?

Coco coir, perlite, worm poop, bat poop, composted forest humus, dolomite lime for pH balance, etc.  It's definitely a coco-based complete potting mix and not just coco.

I pasted the foxfarm website link but they only list the marketing spiel which is a few paragraphs of nothing so I removed the unhelpful link.  The bag says everything that's in it, but I've thrown it away already.  You'll have to google a little harder than I did...

  5. First set of "real" leaves bigger than the cotyledons, now.

Haven't given any H2O since planting.  Topsoil is dry to the touch, but still moist underneath.  I don't like to use a watering can this early, I'll mist it a bit.

  6. very nice.. i like the DWC too...ill subscribe for this one..interested to see how the coco loco is...do you plan on using their bottle nutes as well?

And check out my coco journal..on my 2 round with coco..love it..links in my sig.

  7. I too am curious as to when all that poop is going to be consumed. Seems like an easy way to get through veg at least.

  8. Hows it going?

  9.
Kudos, I think this mix might do fine treated like soil but I'm strictly using hydro nutes and pH (ff grow big for hydro, big bloom, tiger bloom, earth juice elements cal-n-mag)

I thought so too, it will certainly feed the seedling until it's big enough for chemical nutes.

  10. Leaves are looking even fatter and more lush, today.  It's likely indica-dominant.

  11. Oh yeah.

Yesterday was only the third time it needed to be watered.  Also got its leaves misted.

I love the way it's looking!  Haven't fed any nutes yet.  Probably 1/4 strength hydro nutes next time she's thirsty, fingers crossed that it's fem indeed.

  12. Just picked up some coco loco at the hydro shop after killing 6 (yes 6) seedlings somehow. Figured I should try something new. Initial runoff was 3,500 ppm, yikes! flushed it out a bit down to 250. You notice anything crazy like that with yours?

No, but I do suspect the mix runs a bit hot.  I don't usually sweat the PPMs of my runoff, just the pH.  Coco is supposed to flush really well (almost too well) so you really don't need to keep on top of PPMs, you can just flush if you think it's getting too hot.  In theory.  But that's typical of foxfarm, their ocean forest potting mix was too hot for seedlings and clones, half of them would burn up.

I have a feeling they include at least a "Warm" level of nutrients because they may deplete quickly, and I suspect the composted forest humus is in there just to help hold on to some of the nutrients and behave a little more soil-like.  After all, someone just buying coco loco at the garden center who hasn't first read up on coco is likely to treat it like soil, and would fail, if it was just pure coir.

edit: I just measured my OG in coco, 100ppm water, initial runoff came out 240ppm

  14. Not much different from the last, but steady progress, excellent health.  Next update will be after first nutes and before transplant.

Check out the roots (coco loco over hydroton, I wanted to ensure best drainage to get a real sense of how well coco loco holds moisture.  Answer: Real well.)

  15. Coco loco holds waaaaay more water than plain coco. Esp if you are used to running plain coco with a solid amount of perlite. So i figured it would contain a bit more truth about what is going on in the mix. 0 ppm in, 3,500 ppm out started setting off alarms in my head.

Plants are looking good, do you have clones going in this stuff as well?

  16. Hows it going? Excited to see how this stuff works out for ya.

  17.
Dude! I love the sounds of this Coco Loco! I use FF Trio as well, but have been using Botanicare's CocoGro. Might have to look into this other grow medium...

Your plants look great BTW!  :bongin:
