Is It Possible To Hear Complete Silence?

Discussion in 'Philosophy' started by MattDC, Apr 30, 2014.

  1. I mean really think about this. Almost everything that surrounds us in our universe makes some "noise" by some means. Whether it's the wind whistling, a bird chirping, a fan blowing, or a computer running. Although there exists anechoic chamber which is considered to be the quietest room in the world, that still does not mean one inside the chamber will be in complete and utter silence. Only now you will be able to hear every beat of your heart, your breathing, swallowing saliva etc. Therefore, how can you truly achieve an actual moment of silence?

Yes, but the catch is, you don't hear it with your ear. ;)

  4. I'd like to think I'd like to go in that room but I don't know.  Are there any long term psychological effects of being exposed to auditory hallucinations for a short time?  If not it might be something to experience. :D

  5. I think we tend to relate feeling/hearing  in instances that we cant differentiate the two.

  6.
feel like I would start to hear noises while im in similar situations... resting before bed, Sunday afternoon nap, meditation.

idk if I would fux with that lol

  7. Hearing can also be done through our bones. Plug your ears so that you can't hear, then rest the tip of your elbow on a table that ha a radio playing on it. You should be abe to hear, as sound (heartbeats, etc) conduct through bone and liquid.

  8. Maybe it would be spiritually enlightening.  I've been really fuckin high off edibles before to where I hear my own heartbeat but never lungs or bloodflow or anything.  At the moment I felt a sense of heightened self awareness........ but then again I WAS REALLY FUCKING HIGH!  haha

  9. @[member="MelT"] I've heard of that before, definitely cool....

  10. People tend to forget that when they're really high you can have some hallucinations. And while it's going on your really don't know

So, hearing is not exclusively a feature of the ear, right? If there is no input stimuli given to an ear, and I can still hear music vibrating through whatever conduit, other than my clogged ear, then hearing is not a function of the ear as a designated organ..

  12. look into how bone conduction hearing systems work...if someone is born 100% deaf -we are still able to insert a piece of metal into the bone behind their ear and give them sound .

  13.
No, it's both the ear and what you might think of as the 'conductive system', through bones.

Actually, it has to do with the auditory cortex... without the auditory cortex, neither the ear or the "conduction system" can transmit impulses for the production of sound. Hearing is not an action or feature of the organs, nor the bones, rather these things are merely conduits which lead and channel sense-data to a specific region of the brain, so that it can be worked out in neural language; that is to say, sound is a product of brain activity, and not the ear, nor the bones, or the conduction system.

Again, complete silence is not heard by the ears... but by the subject inhering within a brain, i.e., you don't need an ear to hear the silence of your brain.

  16. Um no.

  17. sorry dad.
