The Vegan Paradox

Discussion in 'Philosophy' started by yurigadaisukida, Apr 30, 2014.

  1. The idea of veganism goes a lot further than vegitarianism.

They dont want to cause any animal suffering. They wont even buy non food products if animal slavery was involved.

    Im wondering?

Do vegans drive cars? How kany aninals lost their homes to streets and oil fields? How many animals die from pollution? How can vegans justify contributing to this? Just walk.

Do vegans live in a house? In order for a human to live somewhere, animal teritory must be taken. If your house/appartment wasnt there, trees, birds, insects, lizards, rodents, possibly even a larger animal would live there.

Do vegans use power? Do they even know how many animals lose their homes and even lives to pipe lines, wind mills, solar farms, power plants ect.

How many animals are killed or displaced for resource farms? Just because your computer doesnt contain animal products doesnt mean animals werent harmed in the gathering of resources and building of factories

I realize vegans need to survive. But a lot of this seems like a double standard.

You dont NEED to drive or live indoors or use electricity. Go live off the land. In caves. Under trees.

In fact dont bother farming. This requires animal homeland.

I don't eat animals because I think it is fucked up.
I don't use products that have been tested on animals because I think that is also fucked up.

I drive a car because I like to use it to get me places.
I live in a house, because I like shelter.
I use power because I work via my laptop and the cloud.
I'm not going to start eating animals because I live in a house, drive a car, and have a laptop...

I'm also not going to feel bad about not being this "perfect vegan" that apparently all vegans need to be...
And if we don't reach this perfection we are just automatically shitty hypocritical people...

I personally do not like to tell people I'm "vegan" because then I get into conversations like this.
I'm just a chick who doesn't think it is right to eat, enslave, or use animals when other options are available.

    End Rant.

BTW cattle kept for slaughter creates a shitload more pollution than cars...

  4.
Arbitrarily categorizing living beings as inferior members of a hierarchy to justify their murder and enslavement is like a human holocaust.

  5.
    Nice Tu Quoque, bro.

  6. Eating veggies and animals dying because of human expansion are two different things. At least you're not eating meat right? and the animals that do die from human expansion(horrible shit btw) are not eaten by humans correct?

Maybe youre just an animal activist who wants to save animals. I'm all for it :)

  7.
    Merely a related epiphany.

  8. people cherry pick beliefs. i think for what its worth, most vegans are concerned with the direct death for human gain.

In short, you are a tolerant Ethical Vegan who recognises the difficulty of an abrupt lifestyle swap.
I will point out that you could amass enough resources to break away from a monetary, exploitative society. Or just go live in the jungle altogether, whatever. Fact is, you appreciate the creature comforts of society while resenting the damage done to attain said comforts. What Snoop said.

Ethical Vegans live paradoxical lives indeed as Yuri points out, no two ways about it. But there is the fact that since they are born and bred into a technological society, abruptly assuming ethical veganism with all its implications is quite hard and will require a significant number of generations to evolve into a cohesive, sustainable lifestyle.

Also, this is a personal choice that I believe is a significant development for the intellectual evolution of our species, and it is not our place to knock the people who choose to take this extremely difficult-to-realise decision.

Of course, I believe that someday respect for the sanctity of life will become unnecessary, and the whole point will be moot.
And then there's the possibility of someday growing meat on plants etc. :D

  10. ^^^
Artificially grown meat is in the works as we speak.

What is the vegan take on in vitro meat?

  11. Fairly cut and dry...

  12.
There are vegans who are for it and some who are against it.
I honestly don't know enough about it yet to have a strong opinion.
I do know I wouldn't eat it. I couldn't get over the fact I am eating something identical to real meat.
The same blood, skin, muscles, veins, tendons, fat and all.
It's hard for me to sometimes even eat vegan meats that closely resemble real meat haha.

  13. Veagn 'meats' are disgusting. Less disgusting than chicken curry but close :D

  14. No protein and no fat in that vegan meal.  I wonder how long you'd live eating that.  :hippie:

  15. Problem with that first meme.

Steak is a better protein.source. in fact the top dish had almost no protein

  16. In vitro meat is basically the same as what they are doing in medicine.

Using stem cells to grow organs. Or in this case. Meat.

Vegans use animal suffering as their motivation.

In vitro meat causes 0 animal suffering. Its lab grown. Basically a vegitable.

  17.
Thank you for the info, but I would need to know more like, how much energy does it take to produce?
What could be the long term health effects?
What type of pollution does it create?
    What would be the cost?
What would be the effect on the economy?
How would they retrieve the stem cells?
    and more

  18. There are plenty of meat eaters who are against animal cruelty who turn a blind eye at slaughter houses, they're bigger hypocrites in my opinion. No one can be a perfect vegan, but it's better to do something than nothing at all.
