  1. That's fine to do... The longer it all
sits together the better it is, like leftovers.... 1 month old pizza is very alive!

  2. Cool! Thanks man. Im gonna go mix that up now :)

Is 2cups of kelp and alfalfa the usual per cu. foot?

  3. IIRC alfalfa isnt in the original coot/bluejay recipe, correct me if im wrong but i even think coot was against it. from what i remember it can heat the soil a bit, so if you do end up using it let the soil cycle for a couple weeks.
and 1c is the amount like Ronin said

I leave alfalfa out of my mix now also, and do a bi weekly drench with it instead during veg only. Works great for quick green growth.

  5. I used 2.5c kelp in my cu. Ft. Mix. Don't short yourself on the kelp as many say on here!

  6.

1/2 cup of kelp is enough. 1 cup won't hurt. Over that I think you're just wasting it.

Save the alfalfa for teas. If you really want it in your soil I'd go 1/4 to 1/2 cup.

  7. I added 1/4 cup each of alfalfa and kelp :)

The recipe I used in is my sig if you wanna give some criticism!

  8. Can someone let me know what amendments you add to your soil?
    Or what should be added!
    And why?
Quantitys is up to you i dont mind that bit!

Not as a justification i mean what they do. Please.

Iv read loads of different recipies but im unclear as to what most actualy do!

Lava rock, perlite and husks do same job, but dont the husks eventualy break down?
Sorry for the long question just want to make sure we start on same page lol.

2,535 posts and you don't know how to use the search function here lol. Grasscity has the BEST search function of any forum I've seen.

    Here's my current mix.

    1/3 spaghnum peat moss
    1/3 compost (coast of main)
1/3 aeration ( lava rock and pea gravel)

Then it's just the usual per c.f.

    1/2 cup of kelp
1/2 cup of neem or karanja
    1/2 cup of crab meal

    1/2 cup of aragonite flour
    1/2 cup of gypsum
About 3 cups of glacial rock dust

Maybe a cup of chickity doo doo and a cup of malted barley flour.

Check here for all the reasons why we use these amendments

Or just use the search function here. Search each amendment and filter it by either LumperDawgz2, LumperDawgz, or for the latest and greatest info...Clackamas Coot!!!!

I wasn't trying to be rude, hence the lol. Sorry you took it that way. I was trying to help. Your question was pretty broad for someone to answer. Most amendments are dual purpose so one person may use something for one reason while some else uses it for something totally different. Do you know how many benefits there are to kelp alone?

  13. Sorry for taking it that way.

No i dont thats why i wanted to know what there used for!

Also why i wanted the mix too!

Eg you use 1/2cup for root growth but
Dave uses 1cup for leaf growth.

    But yea...

Im in uk so Build a soil is a no for products so ill prob have to sorce amendments independantly.

Do you know if there is a difference between spagum moss and spagum peat moss? Product i found didnt specify!

  14. There is a difference but I don't honestly know what it is. I jus know we want spaghnum peat moss, and Canadian spaghnum peat moss to be more specific

  15. Sphagnum Moss on the left, Sphagnum Peat Moss on the right. You want the peat moss.

Peat moss harvested from the ancient peat bogs in Canada and that part of the world is harvested at a rate that's a fraction of the production rate. I believe Peat bogs in Europe are in danger of being harvested at too-fast rates, so that's why we try to source it from Canada.

  16. Yes they are! Very very much in danger!!! That is why i am very sceptical of using it in uk! Is there an alternative? I fear canadian my be very exspensive here!

I don't think it'll be too too bad... But I could be wrong.

3 cubic feet here costs me 4.99$ :D

  18. The alternative you can get in a store is coco coir, but it's harvesting techniques are just as shady and destructive as the peat from europe. People here have been composting leaves down to leaf mold and use that instead of adding peat moss.

I haven't used anything other than the SPM, so hopefully somebody with more experience with alternatives can help.

A 3 cuft bale of peat moss is less than $10 here in the states and will expand out to be like 5-6cubic feet. It's super light, too, so I can't imagine shipping's too high. Though, we always advocate trying to find things local to you before shipping a long distance. [IMG][IMG]
