600 W Ballast With 1000W Hood?

  1. Hey Blades,

I had a question. I bought a 1000W Apollo MH/HPS hood with dimmable ballast. I ended up upgrading my hood to an XXXL hood for more coverage, so I have my old 1000W hood still. I need a really good veg light, so I was thinking of using my 1000W hood and buying a 600W ballast. I'm just wondering if a 600W ballast would work with a 1000W hood and 1000W bulb? Will it hurt anything?

The hood doesn't have a wattage, it's just a socket. Match the bulb to the ballast.

  3. Does the bulb have to be 600W? You can't use a 1000W bulb? I'm going to be running it at about 50% usually, so 300W usually. If you can use a 1000W bulb and dim it to 500W, why couldn't you use a 1000W bulb in a 600W and only run it at 300W? Any reason that won't work?

  4. This is one confusing post.

If you have a 600w ballast, why are you looking to buy another one? These ballast are MH/HPS switchable. Just buy a 600w MH bulb for veg and a 600w HPS bulb for flowering.

  5. It's really not confusing. I own a 1000W ballast/hood. Can I get a 600W and use that ballast with 1000 W light/ the hood that came iwth the 1000W. Not that confusing really.

  6. Read your 1st post. You're saying you are looking to buy another 600w ballast. That's what confused me. Now I see that you meant a 600w bulb not a ballast.

From what I understand even the dimmable ballast fires up at 100% for the warm-up period. So your 600w bulb would not fire up properly and would most likely get damaged instantly or quickly.

  7. Dude, lay off the weed. My first post said absolutely nothing about ANOTHER 600W. Sadly in your last post you still didn't answer the question correctly. Thanks for trying, but you obviously aren't getting it.

  8. lol calm down, I haven't smoked in 6 months. But you're right, I misread your actual question. You can run a 1000w HPS bulb in a dimmable 600w ballast. 1000w MH bulb however will not fire up properly in a 600w ballast.

Just buy the 600w bulb. I would not buy a 600w to start unless you get them 2 at a time.

  10. The answer you want is electrical impedence and arc voltage.  The 1KW and 600 watt bulbs have different impedence characteristics and your ballast matches the impedence to keep current flowing without over driving it. Operating too far from the optimum impedence can shorten the life of the bulb and ballast. There is also arc voltage, the voltage which is needed to get the plasma initiated in the tube.  A higher voltage is needed to jump the gap on the larger1KW bulb.  WC is correct about the 100% strike on dimmable balasts.  The high voltage is applied to get the plasma going, then the ballast eases voltage/current down to the selected range after the plasma stabilizes.  While you might be able to maintain an arc in a 1KW bulb with a 600W ballast running at full power, dropping down to 300W is likely to be insufficient to maintain the plasma, and would be very stressful on the bulb and ballast if it did work.

And you might want to reconsider being so chippy to the people trying to help you considering you opened your post asking about a 1KW hood.

Whatever. if you guys can't read, then it's really not my issue. I'm being chippy because people answer without reading the question and then try to say I said something I didn't. It's not my fault he can't read.

And yet this thread still has 1kW hood in its title. It is your inability to clearly communicate your question in the written medium which made it difficult to discern what your actual question was. Just because it sounded good in your own head doesn't mean you got it out effectively. Most people who are asking for help would have shown a bit of tact and guided the responses without being a turd. Enjoy basking in your ignorance.

  13. **** Off. If you're too dumb to understand the question that's not my issue. Take that up with God. The question makes sense if you can read and understand. Even the guy that said it was me admitted he read it wrong. Not my fault you can't read right though Angry. So feel free to exit stage left. I don't need help if it's from people like yourself.

  14. Yep, multiple confused responses and my page long technical answer to your 1KW Hood question clearly indicates that I am dumb and you are not. I shall indeed fuck off immediately and allow you to continue to rule the internet in peace.

  15.
People have been trying to help...going so far as to ask questions as to what they were unclear about...

Given the muddled nature of the OP, I'm surprised people even tried...

I'd suggest that if you want help from the members of GC in the future, you try to treat others with a bit more respect...

Closing this...it isn't going anywhere, and whether OP comprehends it or not, the correct answer has been posted...
