Cannabis, Health, And Exercise

  1. This zone is for postings of preferences, news articles, and/or studies of the relationship between cannabis and exercise.

I am an applied exercise and health student. My goal is to learn about the relationship and how the components of cannabis act on the body pre, during, and post exercise.

Personally I prefer to smoke and continue with exercise. Usually, I smoke, warm up for 5 minutes and go on a run with my pup. When I get back I do some strength training exercises with my exercise tube. I am not a nutritionist, however, I believe the components of this herb can greatly relieve some of the aches and soreness that come hours and even a day or two after a hard days work.

Again, I want to hear your ideas, thoughts, and constructive criticisms!

Please keep this feed happy and as scientific as possible! :)

  2. Don't know if that is what you were asking for but here is a question that bumped around in my head a couple of times.

Let's say I'm not sitting correct and a pain would tell me that I'm doing something wrong and that I should change my posture/whatever, isn't it possible that it would be better not to have the masking effects of MJ keeping me from experiencing the pain? Or a tooth pain I have. I'd check with my dentist, but if I smoke all day err day, who says I'm not only going to notice it when it's already to late and my tooth is all fucked up?

  3. In my experience of combining exercise and smoking I've noticed that I have a better understanding of my body and how it feels. Everyone is different and there aren't very many studies I have found, but in my opinion, once you actually know your muscular imbalances you would have a better understanding of where your body needs to be posture-wise.

So to give you a quick example, say I use an exercise tube. I am right side dominant so, naturally, my right side is stronger. If I step on the exercise tube and accidentally don't hit it dead center, I'm not going to feel it because, in my mind, both sides feel the same amount of tension when in reality I am pulling more weight with my right side over my left and my right side becomes more and more imbalanced.

Sorry if that seemed like a tangent lol.

So, to answer your question, I do not believe it blocks the feeling of lifting and working out and feeling your body while exercising. Exercise is a whole other scientific field when it comes to pain and I can't exactly diagnose you.

Anyway...bottom line I believe, if you listen to your body, it can tell you what is in pain and you will probably feel it. Be very careful, I would recommend getting a doctors note before continuing with an exercise regime.

Disclaimer: this post is purely speculation and should be regarded as so.

  4. Forgot to add it depends on the strain's effect on the body as well.

    IMO several big areas:

The science behind cannabis as an antioxidant; reducing oxidative stress and free radical damage. So it can mitigate the harm of working out, damage from running etc. Dr grinspoon if i remember correctly had proposed letting NFL players use it as front line treatment for injuries and concussions.

Connection to endocannabinoid system meaning the body will respond better to stress, the systems will fire off in order and at optimum capacity, etc.

The mental benefits... Get deeper into the zone, go further, etc. if you're hiking or running in nature you may even have epiphanies while high.

On my mobile but these are just a few ways that it benefits us, from my research and personal experience. Ten + years of use and working out both with and without it over the years. Now it's always with unless I'm taking a t break.

And i would recommend a sativa, even if for meditating.

  7. Hi there, so I have been a cannabis user for as long as I can remember... it has helped me with my yoga practice and my meditation but I have never thought to try it out before exercise!!! HOW AMAZING! I was able to do all my reps complete my whole routine without needing to pause and regain my focus!

After reading a blog about it and did some more research into it, didn't realize there was a whole world of it out there - where have I been? Lol! but anyways I find this great article about it - hope you all can find inspiration!

Also, I had to try a few different dosages to see which gives me the most benefits, what works for me is either 1 capsule of THC/Coconut blend of which the amount of THC oil used is 0.012ml. or I have about 0.1grms of dry herb in a vape. Anything more and I get too carried away, hehe.

  8. Science of Exercising with Cannabis:

Cannabis, as an enzyme catalyst, increases oxygen carrying capacity to the bloodstream. When smoked before a workout, the body is ready and amped to begin on a cold run, which could cause early muscle fatigue. Remember it is always important to stretch before workout routines!

When weed is smoked during your workout session the difference is your own tolerance to withstand "sober" mode before choosing to indulge. I find this method allows for better processing of dopamine rewards for the first inhale as a benefit to the workout.

Smoking after your workout sesh allows for the completion of your "runner's high" without THC yet coursing through the bloodstream to fully take advantage of the endorphins produced from the adrenaline rush of a completed workout. This post-workout smoke sesh method is the most optimal for muscle sedation and stress relief.
