Time For A New Laptop (Lenovo Ideapad Y510P)

Discussion in 'Silicon (v)Alley' started by Omega369, Apr 20, 2014.

  1. I saw a video review on gaming laptops under $1000, and was convinced to buy the Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p laptop.  Ultimately I would LOVE a desktop computer, but my job requires me constantly moving around and I need something portable.

I went onto the Lenovo website and found the Y510p comes in four different models ranging from $799 to $1,049.  After some research I found the more expensive model comes with:
Display: 15.6" FHD LED AntiGlare with integrated camera (1920x1080)
    Hard drive: 1TB 5400 RPM + 24GB SSD
    Optical drive: Blu-ray/DVD-RW
Network card: Intel 7260 b/g/n Wireless (2x2 BGN)

I'm not really a computer guy, been running consoles for gaming since I quit computer gaming after counter strike 1.6 and have no clue what kind of effect all these kinds of things do for performance other than the optical drive.

The $899 model comes with similar specs other than the lack of blu-ray/dvd-rw and integrated camera.  This one may be my choice because I don't really need those.

My TLDR question is: Is the $899 model worth $100 dollars more than the $799 model?

Also there in option to add a Y510P Removable Graphics GT755M5 (888015133) to the system for $99.99? Is something that would drastically improve gaming?

  2. That's a pretty good choice for you. Pretty nice for gaming, work, etc. As for the extra GPU, it's not drastic difference, but I probably would go with it. Good laptop

Well you already bought it, so my input is useless, but you could've did better. That's a good laptop though. I hope you sprung for the extra GPU.

Needs it for the demands of work. OP stated that he's constantly moving around. I myself am in a similar situation where I'm a pretty mobile worker- whether it's taking my laptop with me on the road, or just around the house. Ideally, I'd love to just invest a bunch of money into a really good desktop/mining rig, but at this stage in my life it's very counterproductive. I'm probably going to go the same way Omega went. At least I have a starting point. I've heard Lenovo recommended as great laptops for programmers, so maybe I will look into it. The specs posted are ideally what I'm looking for. Thank God technology progresses at such a staggeringly fast rate- at least for PC/laptops. The fact that you can get anywhere near these specifications for under a thousand is pretty crazy. Especially if you remember how much shitty desktops cost about 10  years ago during the boom.

You didn't goof. Very solid purchase and specs all around. Actually considering this model or at least something very close to it. Only thing that would have to go is Windows 8. Gotta have Linux.
