Thanks GtG, you hit it, 3 plants! They filled out like that in a week! BOOM!! When I'm in there I just 'giggle' when I think about the time I spend mixing nutes and balancing pH.

    Thanks again!

    Hey BGS69'er,

As TJ said, this is a set and forget no-till bed. As you said, that would suck to have to do every 2-3 months!! ;)

Thanks TJ! The mulch makes me smile... LOL

'Set and forget' = Sounds boring... Lol, looks like I'll have more and more time to read and do other hobbies!

  3. BTW,

Not to put a bunch of confusion in peoples heads BUT,

The soil for the above bed was mixed and planted into the SAME DAY. No 'Cooking, homogenizing, sitting, etc' period.

  5. What does the mix consist of? Unless it's a secret! Lol

  6.
    No secrets!

    1/3 Sphagnum Peat Moss
1/3 HIGH QUALITY HUMUS - EWC, Vermicompost, compost, mix of all, mix of some, etc.
1/3 Aeration - Pumice, lava rock, rice hulls, etc.

Add the following to every cubic foot of above 'base mix'

    1/2 cup Kelp
    1/2 cup Neem cake
    1/2 cup Crab/Crustacean meal

4-6 cups of a mineral mix or rock dust - Basalt, Glacial, etc.
For my mineral mix I used:
    3 parts Glacial
    2 parts Basalt
    1 part Gypsum
    1 part Oyster Shell Flour

    Keys to remember:

Moisten your peat before you mix everything together. Might need to be done a day before. I did mine 4 or so hours before mixing and was constantly tending to it until time of mixing.

High quality humus is in all caps above for a good reason. Take that into consideration. Get the BEST stuff you can if you can't produce your own.

Don't over think it! A quote that always comes to mind is 'This ain't exactly rocket science', and it's so true.

  7. BTW @[member="bgsixxxniner"],

The above mix is what's referred to as the 'Coot mix' incase you've heard that through the grape vine.

My mineral mix came from me buying all the items separately and combining together.

If you need small amounts I would say to go to buildasoil.com and grab some basalt. I believe he even sells a 'mineral mix' that would be great too! Most dro stores also carry rock dusts, most commonly Glacial.

  10. Killing it TwB! Absolutely LOVE the color of your plants! And holy damn did they fill out quick! They must be really liking all that soil! I'm super excited to see how this bed turns out for you! I'm predicting a seriously full room in your near future! ;)

So much for the cooking your soil before planting myth!

    Peace!

  11.
I like to cook my soil in a roasting oven for 3 hours and then served with a delightful tarragon-infused béchamel sauce!

    Touching isn't it?

  12. Mmmm, that sounds nice!

  13.
Coot, if you buy some pro-mix you can save a step, it's pre-cooked, ready to go! ;)

  17. Lookin good TWB! Those plants just exploded!! what is the "Nor West Chunk"? Got anything to do with 'Ol Chunk Daddyo?

  18.
Thanks, TJ! Its funny I was just chatting with @[member="Patanjali"] the other day and he was asking if I thought they had exploded. I said 'No, not really'...

    ROFL!! Oops...

I don't currently know the cross of the NorWest Chunk but I will find out. It doesn't have to do with our dude Chunk but it is a cross from an old GC member. I'd like to say his name but I don't know how he feels about that so mum's the word!
