Few Questions

Discussion in 'First Time Marijuana Growers' started by DLmuffinzs, Apr 19, 2014.

  1. I have few questions about growing. Two weeks ago i started my first grow. For my first grow i got Northen lights from Green house seeds.
First question -  Can i grow them ussing sun light when its sunny and put them back in cfl grow box at night ? Or it will induce stress for them by switching from sun light to cfl every day ?
Second question - my oldest plant is 2 weeks old and he is still really short only 2 cm. I was checking other begginers at forum and no one got that problem. Can it be from over watering ?
Third question - When i need to start feeding them fertilizer ?

  2. You can move them in and out, but they are more likely to pick up plant pests outside.  The soil looks very wet, but the plants don't look overwatered.  I use a moisture meter to make sure I don't overwater.  They seem to need more light.  You shouldn't have to feed for three weeks or so from seed.  I would wait a bit- they are awfully small.

  3. I would watch putting them in the sun light for to long, the plants may start to streach for the available sun light. Thats assuming you what to keep them small. If you are trying to keep them small keep them in your grow area, and put your cfl's about a 1 or 2 inchs from the plant. But make sure not to burn them.

As for the size of your babys, Northern Lights is a small strain to begin with. Im currently in day 4 into my grow with Northern Lights and my girls are small too, if you like you can check them out in my gallery.

What do you use for growing? Like your grow area, lights your using, soil type and water is it tap or bottle and are you doing Ph testing on your water.

  4. 1) You should be fine putting them outside. I put my little one out on sunny days because it's at least 5x brighter than my box. It seems to really enjoy it :)

    2) I had a similar problem. When mine was a seedling it stretched up a ton because I was using a desk lamp lol but took forever to grow it's first set of true leaves. Just be patient and give it plenty of love and it will love you back.

    3) I don't really use mutes aside from some used coffee grounds now and then for nitrogen and a splash of miracle grow if it's looking bad. If you have good soil (like compost or something) you shouldn't have a problem.

Disclaimer: miracle grow isn't the best for your plants and I'm aware, but I'm short on cash and it's what we had in our shed lol. If you can get something organic, or better yet make some nice compost tea

My grow setup for now is 5 cfl lights ( 3 of them day lights and 2 warm white). 3 pc fans for intake, outake and blowing on plant.
Soil is with peat substarte, wood parts, clay, sand with broiler manure. soil has N 80 mg/l P 80 mg/l and K 300 mg/l.
For watering i use tap water but it stays 1-2 days without cap before i start using it. I tested ph and its ok.

Thanks for clearing these things out, i am really nervous because this is my first grow.

  6. Dude it looks great!!!!!!! Do you just want to move your plants for the sun light? I have the same basic set up...... if you like you can check my grow space in my gallery and let me know what you think. If I where you I would just keep them in there grow area. This is my first grow also and im so paranoid that im going to drop them or doing something stupid so they only leave when I water..... lol

  7. Yeah if you have a good set up (which it looks like you do), you can leave them in there. My box is very primitive, with no ventilation or any of that so I also put them out for fresh air.
Dude speaking of doing stupid things, I'm on my first grow and I started with 2 seedlings. Well I had my light fixture held up with duct tape (yes, THAT primitive lol), so one day it fell while I was at school and came home to find one of my babies all shriveled and dead :'(

Off topic but thought I'd share. Anything can happen, unfortunately.

  8. Your setup looks really good man. I am thinking redo my box to maximize the potentional grow.
Talking about stupid things i think i over watered my plants. They are becoming yellowish and plants leaf tip looks crappy (you can see in pic).
Do i need allow it dry it few days without even spraying water from bottle for top soil ?
And on this period before veg. time cycle for light is 24/0 or 18/6 ?

  9. Yes, stop watering.  For now at least.  At this point the plant isn't able to make use of all the water you're providing because there just isn't that much plant to drink it up.  Let the soil dry out some.  You'll rot the roots otherwise.  Overwatering also inhibits the uptake of iron and calcium by the plant.  In the container you're in with the point your at in growth, a few ounces once a week is probably sufficient.  Let the plant show you what she needs.  This is your first grow so we know you're looking in on her too many times a day and doting on her like a new mother, right? Try this:  Water the plant until you get runoff.  Lift the container to get an idea of what your "wet weight" feels like.  Do not water again until the plant asks for it.  If you're looking in frequently, you'll notice a tipping point when the leaves stop looking sprung and taut but start to droop a bit.  You've now gone just a bit too dry.  Again, lift the container.  Now you know what "dry weight" or too dry feels like.  (Since you're looking in so frequently, the plant wont suffer any damage in the short time it will take you to notice the droop.) Water again at this point.  Now, you just need to give your plant a heft and you know where you are on the wet-dry spectrum.  Stay away from the extremes on either end, and you should be off to a good start.

For veg, either of those cycles is good.  There is a 24/0 18/6 debate out there, but both camps produce pounds of product so neither is right or wrong.  Do what you feel like on that one.

  10. Just cheked the soil and its still moist in middle and bottom of pot. But the yellowing is stoped. I think the over watering was the thing why plant  wasn't streching and growing. I took look on other smaller plant and its over watered too. Well now i know i dont need watering that often.

  11. R.I.P. my plants. One died from owerwatering and other fell out from hands FML. I started from beginning germinated another northen light. This time i hope dont make that many mistakes.

Is there any difference if i put my cfl lights vertically or horizontal ?
My previous NL was yellowing. It started from leave tips and took over leaves. Mid level leafs was curled upwards. Could it be from heat stress or maybe my plants dont like the soil.

  12. I run my cfls horizontally they say the best light from a cfl comes from the sides of the light. How hot is your grow area and what kind of soil or you using?

  13. Soil is with peat substarte, wood parts, sand with broiler manure. soil has N 80 mg/l P 80 mg/l and K 300 mg/l. I bought Ph tester and ph in soil and water is 6.8 - 7.0 . I was thinking maybe try led bulbs or put them additional to cfl. I was checking led panels in ebay but looks like i am to broke to get one + shipping is crazy to my place

  14. Alot of people grow with the leds and use clfs to light the datk areas of their plant. Leds are expensive but I have seen some good results.
