Killing A Plant To Improve Growth Of Other Plants?

Discussion in 'Hydroponic Growing' started by FDAPO, Apr 18, 2014.

  1. Say there is a small space to grow, about a m^2 (33'' by 33'') and 5 feet tall.

Say there is 3 plants in this space, with 2 plants progressing way better than the other 1 plant. Is it beneficial to remove a bad plant to give the other 2 more space? Could I get a better yield, product off 2 plants in this space, than 3 cramped plants?

  2. I'd say you would get better with the two. More light penetration with two.

  3. Yeah, one plant can fill up that space easily. Might as well toss the stunted one.

  4. Define "bad plant". Seems like a truly bad plant by sheer definition would be culled.

Yield is driven by lit canopy area and not the number of plants.

If two plants fill out your lit canopy area, three is too much.

Key is in timing the onset of flower so as to finish your stretch phase at a size matched to your area. For a given area, 1 plant with 2 months veg time may suffice but 20 smaller plants would do the same job in much less time.

Overcrowding can lead to powdery mildew due to lack of airflow in the lower portion of the plant. In this case lollipoping becomes required, not a big loss of crowded as there won't be much light in that region.

tall plants are a waste, the light is good for a couple feet then is nothing. The bottom of the plant gives you nothing.

4 crops of 36 plants 2 feet tall in that space a year will kick the crap out of few big plants that take 4-6 months. Way bigger yield. Grow buds not 2 extra miles of stems to throw in the trash.

Sea of green rocks the grow room. Been doing Sea of Green indoor for years and save my big tree growing for outdoors where it can go 8 feet tall.

This year Im doing a sea of green outdoors with autoflowers that will be done before July. Might get 3 to 4 harvest that way. Then have a few monsters that live all summer.

Anyway if a plant sucks just push it to the side and get a little test bud.

One plant could indeed fill up that space but will take much longer than 3 plants filling it. As long as you start flowering at the correct time yield will be about the same, but with more plants comes quicker veg times, so more harvests per time.

On the other hand if the plant in question is struggling it may be taking up space that the other two could put to good use

So it depends how bad that plant is doing, can you put up a photo of it?
