Gem And Mineral Hunting

  1. Is there any minerals where you live? If so what state, and what mineral? I've been hunting for years and find it very hard to find simple information on various minerals in my area.. It sais they do not exist here but I'm 100% sure they do...
I live in NE Maryland and know of two very nice spot to find both Obsidian( purple, green, black) and Almandine garnets... the obsidian is a somewhat small patch on a river bank, and it confuses me because it was born from volcanic activity so I seems there should be more somewhere close but I've been looking for the better half of a decade now and still only know one spot... The Almandine garnets come from 3 large rock masses composed of mica-schist, and have very nice shape(typical garnet appearance/structure) .

So yeah haha do you have any cool spots?

  2. Oregon coast, agates and jaspers..a sheeeeeetload of quartz variants (growth types) are all over the beaches if you know where to go.

I'm an amateur rockhound myself, hope to get a polisher, shaper and saw some day to make shiny stuff!

petrified wood, petrified coral, petrified reeds, and thunderbird eggs are nifty to find.

  3. That's awesome, I would love to have some of the coastal minerals like jasper but on the mid-atlantic beaches its all sand, not many rocks so it makes it hard to find nice pieces.. Also the petrified wood and coral sounds sweet, deff don't have much of that around here lol

  4. although if you know the right spots to look around the Chesapeake bay you can find obsidian arrow heads that pre date any found out west.. which makes the land bridge theory seem questionable... not minerals, but pretty amazing if you ask me

  5. Idaho and Oregon have good places. The Black Hills in South Dakota has all kinds of great stuff. I recommend go to SD when you have time to see all the sights, Mt Rushmore, Crazy horse, gold mines. cool minerals all over the place bring a truck.

  6. hell yeah.. I would love to visit the bad lands

  7. I live in AZ and we have a lot of minerals and gem stones in the area. I moved here a couple of years ago and have not gotten into it since the move. Prior to the move I lived in the upper midwest (great lakes area) and found many agates

  8. Western maine has tourmaline, and gold panning is cool in some places, I prefer panning the swift river. I found some placer gold there..
